A season of retooling ended on an upward trend as the men’s soccer Vikes won the final two matches of their Canada West (CanWest) season Oct. 30 and 31 at Centennial Stadium. UVic entered the season as two-time defending CanWest champions, but had lost 12 players including three-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) All-Canadian Cole McFarlane.

For the first time since Tracy David became head coach, UVic’s women’s soccer team will miss out on post-season play this year. David became the Vikes head coach in 2002, and since then, her squads have qualified for eight straight Canada West (CanWest) playoffs, including one CanWest championship in 2008.

Vikes fans came out in droves for the UVic men’s basketball team’s opening weekend on Oct. 22 and 23. The Vikes split the series with the Calgary Dinos with a 68-58 win on Friday, and a 83-74 loss the next day.

The UVic women’s basketball team posted impressive back-to-back wins against the Calgary Dinos on Oct. 22 and 23 in what was both their season and home opening weekend. The Vikes looked sharp, holding off an aggressive Dinos offence in a 73-57 victory on Friday night, and an 81-67 decision on Saturday.

When the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) was established in 2005, it was done with the intention of building a high-calibre league where student athletes could demonstrate their on-ice prowess while receiving a higher education. Five years later and the UVic men’s hockey club remains a proud part of its successful progression.

Vike David Spicer has been awarded the B.C. Rugby Union’s Canadian Direct Insurance Men’s Player of the Year for the 2009–10 season. Spicer lead the Vikes in scoring during the regular season. The team went all the way to the B.C. Provincial Championship. His final tally for the year came to 90 points, scoring in all four possible ways during the season. Spicer, with this year’s other award winners and B.C. Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized on Oct. 25 at the Firefighter’s Club Banquet and Conference Centre in Burnaby.
