Consultant says Australia’s WCup bid too ‘clean’

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—A consultant employed in Australia’s bid for the 2022 World Cup believes it failed because it “played it clean.”

Australia spent $45 million on its bid but won only one of 22 votes from FIFA’s executive committee before the 2022 tournament was awarded to Qatar.

Peter Hargitay, a former aide to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, said in an interview Monday with SBS television that “the fundamental mistake we made … is that we played it clean.”

He said Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy, who headed the Australian bid team, had insisted it should run an open and clean campaign.

Hargitay told SBS Television he was surprised Qatar had won the 2022 Cup because it was not a popular choice. He said Blatter had contacted Australia’s bid team after the vote and said he was devastated with the outcome.

“What do you think motivates people, 14 of them, right, to vote for a country, the population of which is roughly the size of Zurich?” he said. “To vote for a country that is the size of Fiji. To vote for a country where the infrastructure to play host to millions of fans still has to be created.

“I could go on with the list, but you go figure how could 14 men take that decision.”

Australia is not an Asian country and yet it plays in AFA. Blatter received a whopping 1 bl. $ by Qatar not s
surprising I would have done the same thing after all FIFA si the most curupt organization in the sports` world followed by Qatar who buys African athelets for cheap a price gives them nationalityfor an event or two and after receiving a medal or two revoke their the citizenship (for failing to gain medals) and send them packing. a country of 300 000 population gets to host a world cup is evidence enough to prove sports i going downhill.

Aussie is way better than Qatar! Hell, I cannot imagine how the rest of the people (I mean the other nationalities which is way more than the population of the place) can actually enjoy in that place. How can Qatar fix their overall climate so that there won't be any health problems because of the heat alone not to mention their strict, unequally misogynistic ways? I'm a man but honestly, the religion alone is way more than enough to explain my side.

Too much money and time is wasted on bids. I suggest the host nation is chosen randomly, and then given a year to present the plans. The present selection process results in countries colluding, i.e. we will vote for you, if you will vote for us next time.

I'm sure people will be lining up to travel to Qatar and Russia. The selection process was as fair as any match FIFA has goverened. Money talks...losers walk.

It is great to know the Frank Lowvy is such an ethical person. At least he can stand tall,

Blatter is a double crosser and still had the gut to call Australian bid team after the voting. He is the head of the 21 corrupted executive team.

So what if Israel qualified for the world cup in Qatar? Are we going to have another Black September? or perhaps Black June? "Israeli soccer players have been murdered bya bunch of Hamas". Like really FIFA showed how corrupt they are by ignoring facts like fans enjoyment. We will not drink beer, our women will have to cover their legs, I mean brazilian chicks who like showing @#$% won't do it anymore, this is depressing, feel me?

Isn't the dismantling of stadiums and shipping them to the developing world kind of like a bribe to get the votes of those countries. And what about the potential for instability in the region? The culture clashes? and finally the idea of air conditioning all the venues as slap in the face to concerns for global warning. It seems to me that FIFA is becoming more like the UN than a sporting authority.

Australia's Sydney town Centre has movable pavements and traffic islands so at the blow of a whistle the whole huge area can be turned into an airbase. China is a threat but they're not dumb because they ajn't American Democrats or Republicans.

The world cup is nowhere as good a show as the Euro and never will be. The world cup is where FIFA show their favourite freaks...they call them referees, though.

Most of the comments decrying America's failed bid remind me of why I moved to Europe. While there are many legitimate reasons to question Qatar's selection, Australia certainly deserved the chance to host the cup over a country that hosted the Olympics and a World Cup within the last 20 years.

The Arabs have a great chance to impress the world with their natural, original creative flair. It is impossible for them to do worse than the South Africa officials, that much I am sure.
The alcohol issue would be a bummer but if the the tournament is to be staged in an island they could get round that easily. After all, we are their guests and the Arabs are widely known for being hospitable to a fault.

Australia is not in Asia...it's in the continent of Oceania.

Why the hell do the Aussies get a vote? They're part of Asia now, in soccer at least. The fact is Australia land is perfect for suplus Chinese population, if China does become agressive they should attack Australia first. They have a lot of land and not a lot of people.

FIFA has made another huge mistake, albeit for different reasons this time, just like when it gave the 1986 cup to Columbia and then had to switch in the last minute to Mexico because Columbia couldn't cope!
Another point is the following: Where are the spectators going to come from in a nation of just under 2 Million?
The way things are going will we get countries like Luxembourg, Andorra or Liechtenstein applying for the right to host the cup?

As long as Joseph S. Blatter is President of Fifa the USA and England have no chance.

How the @#$% are stadiums going to help developing countries fight off poverty and hunger when they can't even affford to maintain the upkeep and taxes on such stadiums? Most of the developing countries I'm sure these stadiums will be shipped to can't even keep up the buildings they have now. And look at the stadiums built in South Africa. Empty with nobody to occupy them. They're already relics just sitting their among shacks and shanty towns. Thankfully Sepp Blatter is already in his 80's and will be dead by the time FIFA awards the 2026 World Cup. Besides, I think by the time 2018 comes around the new regime of FIFA will realize Qatar is way over its head and award it to U.S.A. or Australia instead just like the Women's World Cup was immediately awarded to the U.S.A. from China in 2003.

I'm sure it will be fine. They've got the money to build nice stadiums and 12 years to do it. Hopefully, they will climate control the stadiums so the players dont die of heat stroke. And its a nice gesture from FIFA to involve the Arab world more in the sport. Now Qatar better train some good players so their national team has a decent showing.

Who cares? The way international futbol is officiated is a joke and outcomes are almost guaranteed. I have never seen more horrible acting as that of an ""wounded" soccer pro after he gets a scratch.
I bet he crowds can't wait to get their party on in Qatar! Woohoo!

So bribery won the day for Qatar. You vote for us and we will give you stadiums. It will be interesting to see what the next bidders offer up to third world countries during the 2026 bidding since this is apparently the new paradigm.

Qatar will build indoor stadiums and they will be nice. But the time to get to the stadiums will be a different story. Traffic will be very bad. Qatar believe it our not is a nice country. But if you guy want a beer at the games forget that. They is not enought clubs to go around at night time either.

The Qatar World Cup will be a disaster! A couple of players will probably die when it is 110 F during a game. A few more will be killed by terrorists. How many stadiums do they have in that tiny country? Will the field(s) be worn out or be all sand by the knockout round? If not the US, then Australia should have hosted. They both have several major cities with large stadiums.

    Now we see.
A bid is based on what the bidder SAYS they'll have by tournament time but has never had nor tried to have before just like a politician who promises to end world hunger, perfect world economy and bring world peace (but not human equality) based on a record of being the local animal shelter executioner.

A failed bid includes proof of currently suitable and available structures and systems and a history of success in parallel events.

So, the next bids should be made by countries with no previous knowledge or success in any world class events thus insuring the finest tournament possible in ones imagination.
