PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP)—Vincent Council tied the Providence single-game assist record with 16 and scored 19 points in a 91-64 win over Brown on Monday night.

Former Friars Vin Ernst and Carlton Screen each tallied 16 assists in one game before Council’s performance.

Marshon Brooks shot 14 for 21 from the field to tally a career-high 33 points, for his fourth straight game with at least 20 for the Friars (9-1). Bilal Dixon contributed nine points and 12 rebounds for Providence.

Brooks ranks among the Big East’s top 15 in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks per game. Dixon’s numbers were part of a dominant performance on the boards by Providence, as they outrebounded Brown 45-27.

The Bears (4-4) controlled the game for much of the first half, leading by as many as eight points. But the Friars put together a 16-3 run to close the half and go into the break up by five, 39-34.

Brooks helped the Friars continue that run, scoring 12 points in the opening four minutes of the second half. He hit a 3-pointer to give Providence its first double-digit lead, and the Friars scored 13 more unanswered points to put the game far out of the Bears’ reach.

Garrett Leffelman scored 22 points to lead Brown, and Sean McGonagill added 12 points and five assists.

Providence improved its record to 91-26 in the series. It was the fifth straight win for Providence, and fourth straight against the Bears.

Providence’s 9-1 start is its best since the 1988-89 season.
