A controversial television ad, called “People Play Real Life Duty,” advertising Activision’s new Call of Duty Black Ops videogame from Treyarch, is receiving a polarizing reaction from male and female viewers. According to the creative lifecycle management company Ace Metrix, the ad, featuring a montage of real people engaged in simulated video game gunfire, registered a 277 point difference between male and female viewers. Male viewers, age 16-20, gave the ad an Ace Score of 770 (out of total of 950) and female viewers, age 36-49, scored the ad 518. With an overall Ace Score of 644, the ad scored almost 70 points above the videogame category norm of 576. The ad also features a cameo of pro basketball star Kobe Bryant and “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones as its soundtrack.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 broke the franchise record for a midnight opening, earning $24 million at the box office. Opening at approximately 3,700 locations in North America, the midnight shows sold out in advance, as fans lined up for hours to be among the first to see Part 1 of the series’ final title. The midnight grosses eclipsed the previous record of $22.2 million, set by the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The taste of victory just got sweeter, as Electronic Arts has kicked off a one-of-a-kind Madden NFL experience. The game maker is teaming up with NFL Network to present the EA SPORTS Madden NFL 11 Rivalry Tour at Buffalo Wild Wings. There’s been no slowdown in the success of Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops has shattered theatrical box office, book and videogame sales records for five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars.  The game established an all-new five-day worldwide sell-through record of more than $650 million, exceeding Activision’s previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, according to internal Activision estimates. Treyarch’s Mark Lamia, talks about the new game in this exclusive video interview.

Iconic and critically acclaimed French duo Daft Punk, who created the music score for Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming film TRON: Legacy, provided two of their tracks from the film for the new TRON: Evolution videogame for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The tracks -- “Derezzed” and “The Grid” – will complement music from composers Sascha Dikiciyan, Cris Velasco and Kevin Manthei in the new game. The game sold 5.6 million copies on November 9 in North America and the United Kingdom. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies in its first 24 hours. Activision has launched Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops at retail stores worldwide. The Call of Duty: Black Ops’ launch follows a record-setting number of midnight openings worldwide, as thousands of retail outlets opened their doors at midnight to deliver the first copies. Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, announced that Fallout: New Vegas has enjoyed record sales since it launched on October 19. Bethesda has shipped five million units of the new role-playing game for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Bethesda said the game has generated over $300 million in retail sales. In addition, the Fallout: New Vegas strategy guide was one of Amazon’s best sellers among all books.

As the world prepares for the epic launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Jeep is hoping gamers will want to get a real-world experience after playing Treyarch’s new game. Jeep and Activision have partnered to cross-promote the new game (see the commercial below with Jeep in-game). In conjunction with the partnership, Jeep has produced a limited-edition 2011 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition. There are two models with the two-door selling for $30,000 and the four-door model selling for $33,500.

While Joey Logano and the No. 20 GameStop Toyota raced to a fourth place finish in the Lone Star State for the O'Reilly Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway, the real news for gamers is what Logano said about Gran Turismo 5 in a press release. Logano, who is featured along with his car in the new NASCAR portion of GT5, said he was looking forward to playing the final version of the game later this month. Logano has played early versions of the game during development and worked with Sony on the NASCAR portion of the game, along with drivers like Jeff Gordon.

NEW YORK -- Microsoft launched the Kinect for Xbox 360 to great fanfare in Times Square in New York City with a big street party starting at 6pm ET. Microsoft pulled out all the stops with a big concert right in the middle of Times Sauare complete with 600 street dancers dancing to MTV Games' Dance Centrral for Kinect and a concert by Grammy-award winning hip-hop music artist Ne-Yo.  Some of the celebs in attendance included Garcelle Beauvais, Jennifer Grey, “Zoey 101” star Chris Massey, Sarah Chalke and lots more.

Continuing to innovate in the 3D television space, ESPN Research + Analytics unveiled today one of the most in-depth studies on 3D TV to date.  Compiling results from more than 1,000 testing sessions and 2,700 lab hours, ESPN has concluded that fans are comfortable with the medium and even enjoy it more than programming in HD.  The research was conducted by Dr. Duane Varan, professor of New Media at Murdoch University, during ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at the Disney Media and Ad Lab in Austin, Texas.

On December 28th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will unleash the deadly T-virus into homes everywhere when Resident Evil: Afterlife hits Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray 3D will flood veins with adrenaline and kick viewers into survival mode in 1080p high definition 3D, optimized for the latest 3D playback devices and eyewear, but also including a backwards-compatible 2D version of the film that plays on all existing Blu-ray players. For those who prefer their zombies safely in two dimensions, Resident Evil: Afterlife will also be offered on 2D Blu-ray and DVD the same day.
