Megamind has invaded videogame consoles. THQ has released games based on the latest 3D computer animated blockbuster from DreamWorks Animation SKG. On December 28th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will unleash the deadly T-virus into homes everywhere when Resident Evil: Afterlife hits Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. The video game industry is readying itself for a battle over free speech to take place November 2 - when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association. The case examines the constitutionality of a California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors. Earl Mellott, a Boston-based partner in the law firm Foley Hoag LLP and member of the firm’s Video Games and Interactive Media practice, notes that such a ban could have a chilling effect on the video game industry.

Students pursuing careers in computer and videogame development at 21 academic institutions across the country are getting a financial boost from the ESA Foundation. The Foundation has awarded 30 scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year to women and minority students enrolled in programs ranging from computer science to 3D animation. Developed by Novarama and Sony’s Liverpool Studio, Invizimals enables players to find, capture and battle virtual monsters hiding throughout the real-world environment by incorporating a camera for the PSP system (included with the game).
