Electronic Arts is offering PC gamers more free Battlefield gameplay. From the makers of the hit arcade shooter Battlefield Heroes comes an all-new entry in the free to play market, this time featuring photo-real characters, environments, weapons and maps. EA will ship Battlefield Play4Free, a deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and intense 32-player online battles, in spring 2011.

Continuing to innovate in the 3D television space, ESPN Research + Analytics unveiled today one of the most in-depth studies on 3D TV to date.  Compiling results from more than 1,000 testing sessions and 2,700 lab hours, ESPN has concluded that fans are comfortable with the medium and even enjoy it more than programming in HD.  The research was conducted by Dr. Duane Varan, professor of New Media at Murdoch University, during ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at the Disney Media and Ad Lab in Austin, Texas.

The video game industry is readying itself for a battle over free speech to take place November 2 - when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association. The case examines the constitutionality of a California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors. Earl Mellott, a Boston-based partner in the law firm Foley Hoag LLP and member of the firm’s Video Games and Interactive Media practice, notes that such a ban could have a chilling effect on the video game industry.

Kofi Kingston has plenty of game in the ring and around an Xbox 360. He’s one of WWE Superstars that will be featured in the marketing push that’s promoting THQ’s new WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2011 game. THQ and World Wrestling Entertainment have kicked off a comprehensive marketing program to promote the new game. THQ-developed, WWE-branded videogames will be integrated into domestic and international events, pay-per-view and television sponsorships, magazines, WWE.com, WWE DVDs, and more over the coming months. In addition, for the first time, THQ will host interactive gaming kiosks at 40 WWE live events. ZeniMax Media, parent company of noted game publisher Bethesda Softworks, continues to expand with key gaming talent. The company has joined forces with acclaimed game designer and director, Shinji Mikami. ZeniMax has acquired Tango Gameworks, the development shop founded and run by Mikami. Best known as the creator of the Resident Evil series, Mikami is a 20-year veteran of the industry who has developed numerous award-winning titles. Tango Gameworks now joins creative developers like id Software and Bethesda Softworks.

Oscar-winning director James Cameron is set to return to Pandora. The director has confirmed that he will begin filming Avatar 2 and 3 in late 2011. Electronic Arts is offering gamers more Medal of Honor shooting action on November 2, 2010. The new mode called Hot Zone features “King of the Hill” gameplay where teams fight over a designated location on a map; the team who holds their position longest prevails. This adrenaline-fueled mode is playable across two all-new maps (Hindukush Pass and Korengal Outpost) as well as redesigned versions of the popular Shahikot Valley and Helmand Valley multiplayer maps. Hot Zone will be available via Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 800 MS points, on PlayStation Network for $9.99 and on PC exclusively via the EA Store for $9.99.

Random House Publishing Group has greenlit a novel based on THQ’s and Kaos Studio’s 2011 first-person shooter game, Homefront. The novel is set in the Homefront universe and co-written by John Milius (Red Dawn and Oscar Award-winning Apocalypse Now) and New York Times bestselling author Raymond Benson (author of two Metal Gear Solid books and multiple James Bond novels). The book will be published by Random House’s Del Rey imprint, and arrive in early 2011 to coincide with the release of the first Homefront game.

Film and TV star Olivia Wilde and the actor who portrayed the original TRON character, Bruce Boxleitner, will headline the voice cast for the upcoming video game, TRON: Evolution, in addition to appearing in the highly anticipated December film, TRON: Legacy. The Hollywood voice cast will star in the upcoming TRON: Evolution video games that bridge the storyline gap between the original TRON film and the upcoming TRON: Legacy film. Kaos Studios’ HomeFront is set in a near-future United States that’s been overthrown and occupied by North Korea. According to the soon-to-be-released Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend report from leading market research company, The NPD Group, in addition to the $3.7 billion spent in the U.S. by consumers on new physical video and PC game software in the first half of 2010, the total consumer spend on content via other monetization methods, including used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile game apps., is estimated in the range of $2.6 to $2.9 billion.

What started off as a very good year has slowed down, despite the release of great blockbuster games. According to the NPG Group,U.S. retail sales of game hardware, software and accessories fell 8 percent in September to $1.2 billion. The one bright spot was Microsoft’s Halo 3, which topped all game sales for the month and helped drive Xbox 360 hardware.

There’s a new independent videogame developer in Marin, California. Fearless Studios announced its formation, executive team, and financial partner. The developer and publisher of social games and software applications has launched a new social game, My Mad Millions for Facebook.  The game challenges players to spend an entire $300 million virtual inheritance by indulging in the excesses of the rich and famous.  Users are rewarded with varying points for accomplishing their digital spending sprees and twice a month, the top 20 percent of active users will reap the rewards offline by sharing in 50 percent of Apps Genius’ game revenue.
