Megamind has invaded videogame consoles. THQ has released games based on the latest 3D computer animated blockbuster from DreamWorks Animation SKG. The game expands the story line from the new film, which stars Brad Pitt, Will Farrell and Tina Fey. Random House Publishing Group has greenlit a novel based on THQ’s and Kaos Studio’s 2011 first-person shooter game, Homefront. The novel is set in the Homefront universe and co-written by John Milius (Red Dawn and Oscar Award-winning Apocalypse Now) and New York Times bestselling author Raymond Benson (author of two Metal Gear Solid books and multiple James Bond novels). The book will be published by Random House’s Del Rey imprint, and arrive in early 2011 to coincide with the release of the first Homefront game.

One of the big games of 2010 will celebrate Halloween long after October. Taking the wraps off one of the most anticipated features and worst kept secrets, game developer Treyarch revealed that the community-favorite “Zombies” is coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops which hits stores worldwide on November 9 from Activision. Zombies were originally introduced in Call of Duty: World at War and became an instant hit. Call of Duty: Black Ops fans can combat the zombie apocalypse in up to four-player co-op gameplay. Microsoft has pushed back the release of Epic Games' third installment of Gears of War until Fall 2011. The Xbpox 360 game was originally given an April 5 release date by Epic Games’ design director Cliff Bleszinski. This new launch date will give some breathing room between Epic’s other big shooter, Bulletstorm, which is currently still on track for a February 22, 2011 release from Electronic Arts for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The International 3D Society announced today that Panasonic Corporation will be the 2010 recipient of its prestigious Charles Wheatstone Award. The Wheatstone Award named for inventor Charles Wheatstone, who invented the Stereoscope in 1838 in England, was also a noted advocate and educator about stereoscopic vision and imaging. In recognition of their great contribution to increasing public knowledge about stereoscopy as a technical art and craft, the International 3D Society acknowledges Panasonic as an educational force for 3D in the 21st century. The Wheatstone Award will be formally presented to Panasonic at the 3D Technology Awards on October 19 at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

A new report released today by research firm Inside Network concludes that the total US market size for virtual goods will reach $2.1 billion in 2011, up from $1.6 billion in 2010 and $1.1 billion in 2009. The report, "Inside Virtual Goods: The US Virtual Goods Market 2010 - 2011" is the latest original research study in the Inside Virtual Goods series, co-authored by Justin Smith and Charles Hudson. Free-to-play games like Bigpoint's Seafight, which is featured in this video interview, have succeeded through the sale of virtual goods.
