New ESPN Research on 3D Finds that Consumers Prefer Passive Technology
Continuing to innovate in the 3D television space, ESPN Research + Analytics unveiled today one of the most in-depth studies on 3D TV to date.  Compiling results from more than 1,000 testing sessions and 2,700 lab hours, ESPN has concluded that fans are comfortable with the medium and even enjoy it more than programming in HD.  The research was conducted by Dr. Duane Varan, professor of New Media at Murdoch University, during ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at the Disney Media and Ad Lab in Austin, Texas.

Megamind Invades Videogame Consoles with Three Unique Stories
Megamind has invaded videogame consoles. THQ has released games based on the latest 3D computer animated blockbuster from DreamWorks Animation SKG. The game expands the story line from the new film, which stars Brad Pitt, Will Farrell and Tina Fey. The Xbox 460, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii and Nintendo DS game is out now, ahead of the November 5 theatrical release. Resident Evil: Afterlife Explodes onto Blu-ray 3D on December 28
After kicking 3D butt on the big screen to the tune of $278 million, Milla Jovovich is taking the action home on Blu-ray 3D. On December 28th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will unleash the deadly T-virus into homes everywhere when Resident Evil: Afterlife hits Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray 3D will flood veins with adrenaline and kick viewers into survival mode in 1080p high definition 3D, optimized for the latest 3D playback devices and eyewear, but also including a backwards-compatible 2D version of the film that plays on all existing Blu-ray players. For those who prefer their zombies safely in two dimensions, Resident Evil: Afterlife will also be offered on 2D Blu-ray and DVD the same day. Conan's John Milius Pens Homefront Novel for New THQ Game
Random House Publishing Group has greenlit a novel based on THQ’s and Kaos Studio’s 2011 first-person shooter game, Homefront. The novel is set in the Homefront universe and co-written by John Milius (Red Dawn and Oscar Award-winning Apocalypse Now) and New York Times bestselling author Raymond Benson (author of two Metal Gear Solid books and multiple James Bond novels). The book will be published by Random House’s Del Rey imprint, and arrive in early 2011 to coincide with the release of the first Homefront game.

Gamers Can Now Stream Netflix on Nintendo Wii Sans Disc
Netflix members in the United States and Canada can now stream content through their Wii consoles with Netflix installed on their Wii Menu. The Netflix disc that was used for instant streaming on the Wii console will no longer be required. Netflix members who have a plan starting at $8.99 a month, a Wii console and a broadband Internet connection can now instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed directly to their TVs by simply downloading Netflix from the Wii Shop Channel. This new channel is available at no extra cost. The new disc-free option installs Netflix on the Wii Menu, making it convenient for Wii owners to quickly access streaming movies and TV shows.

ABI Research Forecasts 3D TV Shipments Will Reach 50 Million by 2015

Microsoft Delays Epic Games' Blockbuster Gears of War 3 to Fall 2011

Microsoft has pushed back the release of Epic Games' third installment of Gears of War until Fall 2011. The Xbpox 360 game was originally given an April 5 release date by Epic Games’ design director Cliff Bleszinski. This new launch date will give some breathing room between Epic’s other big shooter, Bulletstorm, which is currently still on track for a February 22, 2011 release from Electronic Arts for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. International 3D Society to Honor Panasonic at the Stereoscopic 3D Technology Awards

The International 3D Society announced today that Panasonic Corporation will be the 2010 recipient of its prestigious Charles Wheatstone Award. The Wheatstone Award named for inventor Charles Wheatstone, who invented the Stereoscope in 1838 in England, was also a noted advocate and educator about stereoscopic vision and imaging. In recognition of their great contribution to increasing public knowledge about stereoscopy as a technical art and craft, the International 3D Society acknowledges Panasonic as an educational force for 3D in the 21st century. The Wheatstone Award will be formally presented to Panasonic at the 3D Technology Awards on October 19 at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

New Report Forecasts In-Game Virtual Goods Sales to Top $2.1 Billion by 2011

A new report released today by research firm Inside Network concludes that the total US market size for virtual goods will reach $2.1 billion in 2011, up from $1.6 billion in 2010 and $1.1 billion in 2009. The report, "Inside Virtual Goods: The US Virtual Goods Market 2010 - 2011" is the latest original research study in the Inside Virtual Goods series, co-authored by Justin Smith and Charles Hudson. Free-to-play games like Bigpoint's Seafight, which is featured in this video interview, have succeeded through the sale of virtual goods.
