The gaming business is undergoing a major shift away from subscription models as virtual items become a larger part of its economy. Parks Associates forecasts this business will reach almost $6 billion in revenues worldwide by 2015.

Students pursuing careers in computer and videogame development at 21 academic institutions across the country are getting a financial boost from the ESA Foundation. The Foundation has awarded 30 scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year to women and minority students enrolled in programs ranging from computer science to 3D animation. The scholarships were fully funded by the annual Nite to Unite charity fundraiser, which takes place in San Francisco every October.

President Obama has launched the National STEM Video Game Challenge at a White House event as part of the national “Educate to Innovate” campaign. The Challenge aims to motivate interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning by tapping into students’ natural passion for playing and making video games. The first annual competition is being held by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and E-Line Media in partnership with sponsors AMD Foundation, Entertainment Software Association and Microsoft.
