The International 3D Society announced today that Panasonic Corporation will be the 2010 recipient of its prestigious Charles Wheatstone Award. The Wheatstone Award named for inventor Charles Wheatstone, who invented the Stereoscope in 1838 in England, was also a noted advocate and educator about stereoscopic vision and imaging. In recognition of their great contribution to increasing public knowledge about stereoscopy as a technical art and craft, the International 3D Society acknowledges Panasonic as an educational force for 3D in the 21st century. The Wheatstone Award will be formally presented to Panasonic at the 3D Technology Awards on October 19 at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

With the movie still playing on IMAX 3D (and selling out in many cities), AVATAR is also a blockbuster on home video. A few days after the film’s producer, Jon Landau, spoke at the inaugural 3D Gaming Summit, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that James Cameron’s AVATAR became the best selling Blu-ray of all time after just four days in stores.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – In this digital age when Disney’s Pixar Studios are only making CGI movies in full Disney 3D and DreamWorks Animation is focused solely on computer-generated 3D films, Walt Disney Pictures has literally gone back to the drawing board with its latest faerie tale adaptation, The Princess and the Frog – out now on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. But the studio is keeping this franchise connected with today’s gaming audience. Disney Interactive Studios has a pair of games out in tandem with the home video release. And rather than regurgitating the on-screen adventure that Tiana and the prince have through the city and outlying bayou of New Orleans, the Wii and Nintendo DS games from Griptonite Games and Amaze serve as sequels to the big screen action.

Over the weekend, while Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland continued to woo 3D audiences with a $34.5 million gross and a $265.8 million total gross; James Cameron’s Avatar remained in eighth place with a $4 million take and a U.S. total of $736.9 million. With the first Avatar DVD and Blu-ray Disc heading home on April 22nd from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Cameron recently told USA Today that he hopes to bring the 3D movie back to theaters with more footage -- as much as 40 more minutes.
