Developers “Refuse To Give Up” OpenFeint

Social game platform manages to co-exist with Apple’s Game Center on iOS devices.

Peter Relan, chairman of mobile social game platform OpenFeint, says the platform is still going strong with 50 million users, despite the launch of Apple's own platform in September.

OpenFeint, which was established in February last year, has seen its user base double in the past seven months and had more than 125 million game downloads to date.

“We have successfully moved above the Apple stack,” Relan says in an interview with Venturebeat. “We are very pleasantly surprised. The beauty of achieving scale (a lot of momentum) is the market decides. Not you, not me, not Apple. Rumors of Apple Game Center hurting OpenFeint are greatly exaggerated.”

Relan says that over 300 developers are using both the OpenFeint and Game Center platforms for their games. OpenFeint incorporates features absent from Game Center, such as a direct communication channel between customers and developers which allows comments to be exchanged. OpenFeint also includes action replays and friend messaging.

“We have something so fundamental to developers and they refuse to give it up,” added Relan. “The fundamental thing we have is a direct channel from the player to the developer.”
