BioShock Infinite Developed “Simultaneously” On All Platforms

Irrational Games addresses concerns over the porting process for its multiformat title.

Chris Kline, technical director at US-based developer Irrational Games, joined in a forum discussion on the company’s website last week regarding the status of BioShock Infinite’s development. Members were discussing whether the title would be optimised for a certain system and then ported to PS3, potentially reducing performance on the console.

“We have no plans to hand off the PS3 version of BioShock Infinite to another studio. In fact, it's not a "port" at all,” said Kline. “We have a much larger team than we did on the original BioShock, so we're doing simultaneous in-house development on the PS3, 360, and PC versions of the game.”

Kline elaborated on the development process of BioShock Infinite, adding that the PS3’s design was taken into consideration for the multiformat development process: “We all know that the PS3 is powerful but unique console with its own strengths and challenges. But compared to the PC, the Xbox 360 is challenging too,” he said. “So instead of declaring a "lead platform" and porting the game to the others, we've instead changed the game engine so that all platforms look (to a programmer) more like a PS3.”

BioShock Infinite was revealed in August and is set for release in 2012.
