BookExpo News

BookExpo America is coming to New York's Javits Center May 25 through May 27. Hopefully you're planning to attend! I've been going to BEA for what seems like ages now, and it's been remarkable to me to see how the comics, manga, and graphic-novel scene has grown there. It started small and has grown by leaps and bounds. And it's not just with the exhibitors, although there are more and more of them as well. We've also seen a number of panels related to comics pop up.

Free Comic Book Day Is Coming

For the eighth year in a row, comic shops around the country will be participating in Free Comic Book Day. The annual event takes place the first Saturday in May, and it features big comics from many of the top publishers. And of course, just as the name states, copies of those special issues are made available for free on that day (get there early; they often go quickly, a sign of how successful and important this promotion is).

Asterios Polyp Wins in L.A.

David Mazzucchelli's Asterios Polyp took the first graphic-novel prize in the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes this weekend. It's a well-deserved honor, of course, and made even more important because it's the very first time a major book prize has recognized a category for graphic novels. Asterios Polyp is such a wonderful piece of art, and a novel that will resonate with readers for so many years to come, that I'm glad it's getting this major attention. What a fitting recognition for this book.

Two Important Upcoming Events in NYC

If you happen to be in or near New York City, the next two weekends bring two very noteworthy events you'll want to check out. The first is the annual MoCCA Fest, a brilliant exhibit of creators, talent, exhibitors, afficianados, and more. It's both Saturday and Sunday (11-6 and 10:30-6, respectively).

The Eisner Nominees Are Out

The 2010 Will Eisner Awards (for which I was one of the judges) were announced today. I expect there will be some disagreements about what was nominated and what wasn’t—which is part of the fun. I know it’ll be a good discussion, at least, and I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say about it. I know firsthand the kind of care and concern that went into making this list. So what was nominated? Check out the list here! And let the debates begin!
