The Jungle, a portable online console, may be revealed today.

Technology blog CrunchGear is claiming to have received a document detailing a new gaming system called the Jungle, made by Panasonic.

CrunchGear’s article displays an image, alleged to go live at the official Jungle website sometime today, which shows a portable device with a keyboard, single screen display and, possibly, two circular touch-pads or speakers.

A video also suggested to be officially related to the Jungle shows Bigpoint’s Battlestar Galactica Online running – a reference to the the game on welcometo.thejungle.com suggests it will be the debut software announcement.

The official Jungle website describes a mission to “create an ecosystem around online gaming”. Central to this goal is: “A new mobile device concept designed specifically for online gamers. We’re also working with leading online game developers to create some exciting new content.”

The company’s previous foray into gaming hardware was with the 3DO, the brainchild of EA founder Trip Hawkins. Launched in 1993 and discontinued in 1996, many believed the 3DO priced itself out of the market with a launch price of $699.

No mention of software support, eek, best of luck to them so. Is this aimed at the social network gamers? I don't get how this will fit in / sell.

They should call it the R.E.A.L. 3DS!

Ahh... Someone will eventually find that funny.

Seriously though, Crash 'n Burn was one of the best pack-in games ever. I still play it, on my original FZ-1 machine with no problems whatsoever. Some of the best physical hardware that was ever made; except for that whole daisy-chaining the controller thing.

I miss the '90s version of "high-tech!"

3DO, Ouch!

Painful memories...

Was the 3DO really that bad though? The tech was fairly similar to other consoles of the time and It had a fairly decent catalog of games. But it was dropped on a market already largely dominated by Sega and Nintendo.

It also be said and would certainly be foolish not to at least consider that Panasonic might drop a clanger. Equally with very little innovation; aside from forays into 3D. Is happening in the world of hand held gaming, so I'd welcome anyone that could be a new spin on it.

I was all about 'the tech' in the 90's and I blew a lot of money on failed consoles as a result :(

I'd put it down to poor marketing, a low number of games to choose from, lack of third-party support and a ridiculous price tag put the writing on the wall for the guys at Panasonic. Good luck to them but I personally wouldn't invest in one of these at launch day as I've made that mistake far too many times in the past! I think it may struggle to find itself a position within today's mainstream market of consoles.

I was lucky (?!) enough to know someone with a 3DO and so could get shots of it fairly regularly.

Like you say it wasnt a bad console, but I think it was certainly overpriced and then the console was dropped in what I remember seeming like an overnight, moonlight move IIRC.

That was the OUCH :(

Although that would be more to do with 3DO themselves, and not Panasonic, who merely made the thing for them.

Wow, Panasonic jumping back into gaming... Good luck!

It's hard not to be sentimental about Panasonic entering thr ring again, but I really do think this has FAIL written all over it.

That is one sleazy picture as well (not of you, but of the device)!

My only concern would be the already established dominance of other devices. If Panasonic think they can over come that hurdle or present some new technology. Like I said; good luck. If the games are decent and the user base becomes strong I'd probably have a look.

This has to be squarely aimed at Korea's, China's and Singapore's MMO craving community. I'm calling it, this won't even make it to the West in any official form. However if it has a vibrant home brew/hacking community (nearly guaranteed) it could be a nice emulator. But who would pay the probably high price for a simple rom games machine?

I totally agree here. Very good observation!

This is absolutely the only way a device like this could sell. Straight to Asia, and then it's a wrap.

has the announcement been made official yet?

i'm not sure if this thing is supposed to play PC games via downloads or if the content will be specifically designed for the platform?

Some might mock the Jungle's name...

I remember the magazine Mean Machines didn't have a picture of the Sony Playstation before it was released so they put a picture of the Playskool Playstation instead. Ha, How I laughed.

I'm going to buy one and give it to my Mother, just so I can say my Dad has been playing with my Mum's jungle.

Creating an Eco System around online gaming. Suggestions as to what this means?

It means that you are CORNEY!

Wizardsixr's picture

Well this is a interesting but with the 3ds and psp2 it was always going to fail.

Jason_Wells's picture

3ds won't do as well as you might think (expensive) and mobile online gaming is the next battleground. Any portable coming out without internet access built in is going to struggle against the next generation of mobile phones.

Opinionated's picture

This is interesting, but I just can't imagine it being successful with 3DS, PSP 2 (to be announced soon. officially), and iphone/ipads on the horizon.

Software will make the difference, but surely they wont garner the first party support of Sony and Nintendo, which leaves only third-party developers, who wont jeopardize their business relationships to take a chance making games for a portable that seems destined not to compete.

I had a 3do :) It actually wasn't a bad machine for the time.

Did you have "Return Fire"?
best two player game ever!

jb1's picture

Yes i did, and you're right it was a fantastic game :)
