Utter turdfest

Ollie, August 2009

So this is what passes as stand-up these days. Curse this failing species.

Cancer > Spencer Brown

Truth, July 2009

If Spencer was to act as himself on stage, then the gags just wouldn't work. The corny lines need to conveyed by such a corny persona. If he stood there with the mic stand repeating line after line of puns, then the audience would lose focus and become bored very easily; it's like if Tim Vine just stayed in the same spot and read out his puns. There needs to be a knowing appreciation for the audience. Admittedly, Spencer takes it to the extreme, but the material can't speak for itself without a voice behind it, remember.

Marcia Connor, July 2009

Bizarre and original and keeps your attention all the way through! Great timing.

ns, September 2008

I like a whole lot. Silly me, however, I thought he was genuinely excited, simply willing to act enthusiastic about being there, as opposed to the too-common (effective, but too common) lethargic approach of smugly basking in your own wit and cut. Still, whether its an act or not, he does what he does well, an actor with great lines.

P Greene, July 2008

In a world of dry, satirical comedy, Spencer Brown is going for the cheesy, silly-little-me-but-please-like me approach. We smirk at his deliberate naivety, smile at his facial contortions, laugh at his surprise punchlines… And leave feeling let-down. Maybe because this kinda persona’s so tired: it’s a cop-out, hamming up corny lines by pretending they’re meant to be corny. Or maybe it's because there’s a snidey arrogance behind it all. Still, there’s much to admire. He plays with words, plays with timing, plays with our expectations… There’s real quality here, only Spencer doesn’t have the guts to let it speak for itself. He could be great. But he’s gotta be himself first.

Michael Monkhouse, October 2007

Spencer Brown is easily one of the funniest comedians I have ever seen. He is great fun to watch and his jokes are always original and very funny.
