Colecovision

The story of an upstart leather company that took on a corporate titan. Colecovision could've been the next big thing if it wasn't for some major problems that popped up along the way to their unattainable success. Another interesting episode in the history of video games courtesy of Play Value.

I love video games, but I'm only 17 so I wasn't around a lot of this stuff. I find it very interesting to see where video games got their roots and how the industry was formed. I love the show, and look forward to more (hopefully longer) episodes, keep up the good work.

I agree. It's nice to know what happened to make the videogames I love today.

I know that it is not directly related to games solely, but many of these marketing mistakes are very similar to Osborne Computer, who made the first portable computer (30 pounds) and his only competition was ComPac (which lasted). Osborne, after hiring 1,000 employees, producing a portable with a 4" green monitor built-in, announces a new version, the Osborne 2, with a 7" amber screen, at the "same price" while he still have 200,000 Osborne 1 units stacked in warehouses! Ie: the end of Osborne...The game companies have constantly made the same sort of mistakes. Osborne finally died after trying to come out with the Osborne Vixen, a small machine, only about 100 hand build units (I have three of them). What a bunch of mistakes all these people make.

How about the Atari Linx? I have the hand-held video game console still...They made about eight game cards, then announced they were no longer going to support the Linx, nor produce any more games...After about 18 years, it still works, but real shame on Atari (who ever owned it then) for bailing out on the console so fast!

Yeah, we're planning an episode that's just ALL about handhelds, and we'll cover the Atari Lynx there. We mentioned it briefly in the Commodore 64 episode, so you might want to check that episode out.

Is there a plan to offer these great videos on a cell phone? My employer has banned all on demand video, including On Networks, and it would be great to see this show on my cell phone.

Mmmm... Colecovision.... My first console, and even now I still love digging it out for another go at Q*Bert, Zaxxon, or Lady Bug. I'm lucky enough to live near (Leicester, UK) a dealer who still trades in second-hand and even ex-rental(!) carts so I'm building up a good collection ready for when collectibles like these become valuable. Think I might have a long wait though.

mmmmmmm

What the hell? "The rise of Nintendo" video completely Contradicted the "Colecovision" video. In the Colecovision video, it said Nintendo gave Donkey Kong to Coleco; but in the Rise of Nintendo video it said that Coleco took it without asking. Which one was it?

Good memeory! Here's the scoopp: Nintendo gave Coleco Donkey Kong rights for the Colecovision console as this episde covers. They did NOT give it to them for their computer the Coleco Adam which was coverde in the "Rise of Nintendo" episode. Coleco just made it for the Adam without asking. Actually, Nintendo sold them "cartridge rights", so Coleco could have fought their using it on the Adam in court (since it was on a cartridge), and they might have won. But Nintendo was so mad, that they just apologized and dropped it.

whens the next episode coming?

I can not beleive Discovery channel stole your show and idea. The bumper music is even the same. I hope you are getting royalties!!!!!

No Way!!!!

When are they airing the Discovery Channel versions?

Ugh. It was bound to happen sooner or later, I guess. Thanks for the heads up.

My daughter and I love your shows. I first saw them on AT&T U-Verse. I showed them to her so that she would see the kind of game system we grew up with.

Your shows bring back GREAT memories of times gone by. Keep up the GREAT work.

Best Wishes,
Ruben S. Rodriguez

Ruben,

Thanks. Brings back a lot of memories for me, too, while I'm making them. Man, I had good times playing games as a kid...

Thanks everyone for the nice words about the show. As of right now, there are only the 10 episodes listed on this page, but more will be forth coming shortly.

Awesome show!!

Where can I find more webisodes ?

Thanks for the kind words. I, too, would love a 22 minute show. Like I said at the beginning of the show, we're going to get more in depth the longer the show goes on, so I hope you'll continue to find the material more and more interesting.

Wow! This was a fascinating episode, chock full of obscure information, much of which I've never heard before! Now, if you could just get the powers that be to allow you to triple the episode length...

Seriously, you guys deserve a lot of credit. This show is really hitting its stride, and becoming something I seriously look forward to every few weeks...

Ouch. The Adam.

Great stuff. Again. I'll keep waiting to see the episode on the Ti99/4A (popeye, congo bongo, burgertime(impossible), hunt the wumpus---- PARSEC!)

talk about peripheral hookups!

Yeah, I loved Congo Bongo. Pretty hard though, as I remember it. As for the TI 99, there's an episode on the Commodore 64 coming up soon, and we briefly mention some old computers from the early 80's during the great home computer rush that Commodore eventually dominated. Can't remember if we covered Texas Instruments stuff. though. TheTi99 was 1981, no?
