GEOLOGIC BACKGROUND:

The Sand Mountain volcanic field (cinder cones and associated lava fields) is located near the western margin of the High Cascades of central Oregon. There are two intersecting nearly north-south alignments with over 20 cinder cones.

The following are included within this volcanic field:

  • Lost Lake Group
  • Little Nash Crater
  • Nash Crater
  • Central Group
  • Sand Mountain Cones
  • South Group
  • Inaccessible Cone
  • Twin Craters
