Mt. Hood is located on the crest of the Cascade Range, 75 kilometers
east-southeast of Portland, Oregon, and 35 kilometers south of
the Columbia River. At 11,245 feet high, Mt. Hood is the fourth
highest peak in the Cascades and the highest in Oregon.
Much of the south slope of Mount Hood is a broad, relatively
smooth fan that slopes down to the area around Government Camp
and is bounded on the east by the White and Salmon River valleys.
HISTORIC ACTIVITY:
The most recent pumice and ash eruption occurred in the 1865
and was centered at the Crater Rock dome.
There is fumarolic activity near Crater Rock and some hot-spring
activity occurs lower on the volcano flanks.
