Whistle v1
Reviewed by Kevin Hill

In a contrast to Eyeshield 21, Whistle's lead character, Sho, really wants to play football. By football, I'm talking 'soccer' this time. Sho wants to play it so bad, that he transfers schools, as he wasn't good enough to make the prestigious team at his previous school. Now that is commitment to football.

Commitment appears to be the key to this comic. It's all about having goals and working hard to achieve them. A comic with a message might seem unusual, but I'd say that it works. Heck, I was tempted to break out a football and have a kick around after reading it. It mainly comes down to the characters, the majority of whom are highly pleasant, and unique. It's actually difficult to think of any negatives, as Higuchi has most of the bases covered (should that be 'men marked'?), with his artwork covering the action, as well as the minor comedic moments, well.

What I will offer in criticism comes down to the translation. I'll accept that the word 'soccer' is going to be used throughout, since it's primarily been translated for the US market, but it would be nice if the translation / adaptation team had prior knowledge of the game, or at least knew where to look. The key point is where Sho is listing some of his favorite players, which includes Ronaldo and Del Piero, but also Joel Kaef and Shiarrah. Now, this could be down to the Japanese being 'faulty' in the first place, but anyone can quickly find out that there are no French players named Joel Kaef, and definitely no English players with the name Shiarrah (as an Englishman I'm kind of insulted there too), and they should really be Djorkaeff and Shearer.

Of course, it is a sad state of affairs when the footballer in my soul is forcing me to criticise some spellings, but is pretty indicative of the overall top quality of this comic.
