Suppli v3
Reviewed by Ysabet Reinhardt MacFarlane

In its third volume, Suppli continues to be a window into the challenges faced by a young professional woman trying to juggle a desire for romance and the all-consuming responsibilities of a job she loves. Minami's grueling schedule and her uncertainty about whether the man she's falling for returns her feelings are both portrayed in an unrelenting stream of busyness that matches the pace of her life.

The two main things going on at the beginning of this volume are Minami's discovery that she may be part of a love triangle: the man she likes, it turns out, is in some kind of relationship with another woman in the office--but the exact nature of that relationship proves difficult to pin down, especially since Minami is reluctant to open herself up enough to admit that she's worried, or that she cares that deeply. Part of the image she's reaching for is that of the blasé, detached professional woman, and allowing herself to get too caught up in something other than work seems to go against that ideal.

Meanwhile, her job is as hectic as always, and Minami finds herself assigned to a project that no one expects to succeed, one that involves working closely with someone she'd rather not be near. But a brilliant young freelancer takes an interest in the project, and his help may be enough to help them pull it off.

Okazaki's art continues to be gorgeous and evocative, conveying the momentum of the story and, occasionally, stopping to linger over a rare moment of stillness. When Minami has a moment to catch her breath and contemplate what's going on, instead of working to keep her head above water, the reader is right there and seeing what she sees.

This continues to be a realistic, interesting series, and if it sounds at all like your sort of story, I encourage you to give it a try if you haven't already.

Volume 3 of Suppli includes a one-page glossary and list of honorifics, and is sold shrink-wrapped.
