Reviewed by Craig Johnson For those who love illustration and those who want to learn! Forget the instruction on illustrating pictures - be they full page gorgeous paintings or manga sequences - this book (at just shorter than A4) contains some double-page art spreads that are worth the money for them alone, putting many other art books to shame. The first dozen or so pages contain six such images, all remarkably different, all beautiful, all undeniably manga. In fact, these pages are the perfect example to present to one of those naysayers who insist all manga art looks the same. Enough of the art - after all, the book presents itself as a Style School, so specific techniques discussed in the book, then, creating art with: markers....photoshop...colored inks...watercolors...acrylics...Lightwave....technical pen...screentone... How to test out various color art supplies....how to test out various black and white art supplies...it's a veritable feast of hints and tips, even experienced artists could get something from these, for aspiring creators or even those just interested in the medium, it's a gold mine. The book is filled out with examples of submitted art from readers of the magazine this book is drawn from - usually aged between 19 and 24, some of these pieces are so beautiful you'd swear they'd been drawn by someone with twice or more experience...very very top quality illustration...and there's hundreds of examples of these. In a word...beautiful. In another...essential. Comment on this review of Style School v1 on the Manga Life Forums. |
