Revolution Baby v1

“Anime fans rule the country…but it’s not the perfect world we imagined. In the midst of the chaos of counterrevolution, idol singer meets bunny girl and they plunge into a maelstrom of music, cliché, students, violent cops, tight bodysuits, great big f**k-off robots, lightspeed martial arts and panties.”

The Story:
So basically, the UK is run by an anime government, anime is the law: “All citizens shall exhibit behaviour similar to characters in anime and manga at all times”. A hot chick with bunny ears called Tuzi falls madly in love with the lead singer of a rock band and has a strong desire to find his long lost adopted brother. Lost already? You should be, but that’s ok, the storyline really isn’t that important. This manga is could almost be said to be more of a fanzine, a tribute to the great manga we all know and love. Every page has a reference or an in joke (all nicely referenced in the back in case you don’t get any of them!) and it makes it a hilarious read for fans of manga.

The Characters:
The main character Tsui is the most developed character however most of the characters do stay quite two dimensional. You know what you need to know to make the interactions between the characters work but that’s it. Much like the storyline it remains confusing.

The Art:
The artwork does leave a lot to be desired, it’s very basic and quite amateur in places. There are a few panels that are hidden gems throughout the volume but if artwork is very important to you, this is probably one that’s best avoided.

The Verdict:
Ok, so it’s not the best manga in the world, the artwork is sketchy and the storyline does seem kinda pointless. But this manga still truly shines as a tribute to manga everywhere. The over the top manga references and the in jokes make this a hilarious read. If you love manga, this may not be a vital read but it will certainly make you laugh!
