Nodame Cantabile v11
Reviewed by Dan Polley

In Paris, Nodame and Chiaki finally learn the outcome of the competition Chiaki has participated in. So begins the 11th volume of Tomoko Ninomiya’s Nodame Cantabile.

But before the competition is over, Chiaki’s competition, France’s Jean Donnadieu gets some interesting news from his teacher.

After the competition ends, Chiaki gets some unexpected news that changes his life. The question then becomes, how will Nodame deal with it?

And soon after the competition ends, school begins. But Nodame has troubles settling in to her routine and her classes don’t go quite as she expects them to, either.

Nodame meets someone new, though. He’s a Chinese exchange student who takes her up in arms of friendship. But Nodame’s flaws in her musical abilities are pointed out indirectly by her new friend when the two go to a dinner and realize they don’t have money to pay. To make up for it, they both play a song for the dining crowd.

Meanwhile, Chiaki is finding his new life to be more unexpected than he could have thought. Indeed, he’s having a difficult time adjusting, at least until he meets someone who he can befriend.

The relationships continue to be the strong point for this series, especially the dynamic between Nodame and Chiaki. However, as that dynamic plays out over the course of the volume, it’s hard not to wonder how it might change if any other obstacles come between the two.

Nodame Cantabile continues to be a good manga that explores the musical world and the relationships therein. The tension in the relationships in this volume is apparent and it helps propel the story along.
