Love Hina v2

Second verse, same as the first, a little bit louder but not much worse . . . though I can’t imagine how much longer this formula will hold out, as it’s already wearing a little thin.

Though a few other characters are explored, like Suu and Shinobu, the cast is generally as loud, boisterous and eager to misinterpret everything as usual, leading to much abuse to heroic punching bag Keitaro. Though he and clearly-destined-girlfriend-to-be Naru constantly study hard to pass the entrance exams to Tokyo University, such an accomplishment would likely bring the series to a close rather quickly, and though he hasn’t failed in his attempts yet, such a result looms near. And when that happens in the next volume or so, the remaining 11+ volumes will be spent, what, preparing for the exact same test again?

Thankfully the series hasn’t gotten overly repetitive yet. One strength is that it chronicles the passage of time in Keitaro’s efforts, as he spends his first Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day in the company of women. His loser bachelor status is a little over played, but he keeps just cool enough to remain somewhat admirably composed. He’s a little too easily seduced or excited over sexual opportunity, but that isn’t a problem so much as the girls carelessly conveying the wrong intentions.

Still, it’s an entertaining hyperactive ride thus far, but unless we get a little more depth or a twist on the established conventions, my enthusiasm will continue to drain.
