Reviewed by Michael Aronson “The King of Fighters Tournament of 2003. The Tournament has grown to be the most renowned martial arts contest in the world. New rules and new fighters bring constant media coverage, making KOF 2003 the largest of all previous tournaments. KOF 2003 marks the beginning of a new epic saga in the KOF franchise. The tapestry of human relationships that entangles our new hero and an evil entity is revealed by degrees . . . KOF 2003 is more than just a fighting game – it’s fighting with a purpose.” Well, that last part isn’t necessarily true. King of Fighters reads like a nightmare to anyone who isn’t intimately familiar with the games and characters, because unless the reader has any idea what is really at stake for these character (since it isn’t often clear why they spontaneously break into fight at every opportunity), the experience will be a lot like watching a geneticist decipher a strand of DNA. KOF is a tad more amusing than that. If mindless action is all you crave, KOF has it in spades. The inked art is rather stunning and kinetic itself, but when certain panels are digitally inked, the result is often rather beautiful and resembling the graphics found in today’s standard of video games. But the designs . . . the flock-of-seagulls-haircut dude with painted fingernails who looks like a chick? What were they thinking? Video game-inspired comics don’t have to be fluff. Metal Gear Solid is slick and engaging and Street Fighter is surprisingly fun and eclectic. KOF is the embodiment of a stereotypical comic adaptation of a video game.
