Also known as The Kindaichi Case Files, this series of manga adventures (of which The Opera House Murders is the first volume) are defined immediately by the quick mental capabilities of Hajime Kindaichi, grandson to the famous detective Kousuke Kindaichi. However, Hajime is his own person and has to build up his personal reputation of greatness from scratch - he is considered a drop out and loser by his 11th grade peers. Sure, his laziness gets him a clumsy image, yet behind the exterior lies a brilliant mind, perfectly suited to problem-solving.

So it comes as no surprise when he demonstrates these abilities when a series of murders occur. His detective work and deductive powers are of the highest standard, above police detectives as he outsmarts the killer and closes the case.

Partnered by friend, Miyuki Nanase, and Detective Kenmochi, Hajime becomes involved in many murder cases. What makes this series special for me is how the case is told, with an aspect of eeriness, dragging you into the pages as the case unfolds. The books are written very strongly, and Hajime's unveiling of the case towards the end often has everyone guessing.

So, the series is a fabulous read, especially at night. They include tangents of humour and excellent artwork, and it's well worth picking up the first (self contained) book to try out.
