Hinadori Girl v3
Reviewed by Michael Aronson

“Secrets are revealed as Akira steps toward adulthood . . . The hidden past of Akira’s father and her mother’s top-secret data in Sally 001 is about to be revealed. Tsukiko will make known why she wants to obtain Sally 001’s data. Sasuke will reveal his true intentions for putting up with Tsukiko. And will Akira reveal her growing love for her brother Yoshiki? The pieces will come together and lips will lock in this final installment of Hinadori Girl.”

Awkward . . .

It doesn’t take a detective to figure out from the synopsis that the romance in Hinadori Girl is an incestuous one. Now, I’m not any fan of incest, but I don’t discount its potential to add to a story (see the hit Korean film Oldboy). But the problem with it here is that it’s treated as the main source of romantic tension and isn’t given any particular context or meaning. In fact, the only additional implications are that Yoshiki and Akira, brother and sister, maintain the household as if they were a married couple. Yeah, it’s pretty awkward.

By the way, this is also the end of the series, and as such everything has to wrap up neat and tightly after only three volumes. As such, it’s a little tardy to be introducing new character Luna who doesn’t really offer anything necessary to the cast – it’s already pretty cluttered as it is. Balancing Akira and Yoshiki’s (shudder) relationship, the mysterious secret of Sally, the past of father Hidetoshi and his deceased wife, the nefarious agenda of Tsukiko and Sasuke, and resolving the importance of friends Nao and Nobuyuki is a lot to cover in a single volume, and due to the overall brevity of the series, it’s not all that smooth.

If you’ve already read the first two volumes of Hinadori Girl, it would be a waste not to see it through to its end. But for readers new to the series, despite the accessibility of its brevity, it doesn’t deliver a satisfying conclusion and isn’t really worth investing in.
