Gunsmith Cats Revised Edition v1
Reviewed by Dan Polley

Gunsmith Cats by Kenichi Sonoda is pretty much what the title lends for expectations: Gun-toting women. But in this case, they’re teenagers who also happen to have their own gun shop and are professional bounty hunters who moonlight by achieving extra violence.

Rally Vincent and Minnie-May Hopkins are teenagers and they’re not to be messed with. The tone of the characters and the series is set early, on the first page the main characters are introduced, when the two engage in hyper-sexual behavior and talk about their uber-violent career choices.

Gunsmith Cats: Revised Edition is an more than 450-page omnibus collection of a bevy of tales with gun-toting Rally and bomb specialist Minnie-May with several longer-term plot points woven through.

Through all the adventure, Rally and Minnie-May stay pretty close, but they do have their up-and-down moments. The duo encounter all sorts of seedy underground characters as they try to make money in their bounty hunter night jobs. There isn’t much character development in the volume, except for two points: Once when Rally and Minnie-May have a huge argument that gets overblown and once when Minnie-May’s boyfriend is introduced. Both times the development isn’t all too great.

However, Gunsmith Cats doesn’t set out to set the world on fire with its vast character development. What it does try to do — have two strong female characters kick butt — it does fairly well.

Action is what the art is all about. And it does it well. It’s concise, but it also makes sure that you’re in for the ride. It’s hard to pass more than a few pages without any action lines or big action sequences.

Gunsmith Cats tries to do a few things well, but it just doesn’t mesh. It does have some pretty fun and adventuresome action, but it’s nothing that’s particularly enthralling. The volume also has some mature content that should not be recommended for young teens. The action-paced art is what carries the title.
