Gon v1
Reviewed by Dan Polley

“Gon” is the story of a dinosaur whose curiosity aids him in getting into certain precarious situations. And in Masashi Tamaka’s story — told completely without any dialog or narration — Gon is the center of attention, the creature that attempts to steal the show and does so successfully, most of the time.

In this first volume, which contains four episodes or stories, Gon tries his hand at several things, including flying.

It’s masterful how well Tamaka’s art stands on its own and wonderfully balances the need for breathtaking art and a well-plotted story. And the art is often amazing. In the story in which Gon attempts to fly, there is a two-page spread of Gon in a bird’s nest with the bird’s young that is fantastically detailed and beautiful.

However, as great as the art is, it doesn’t stop the volume from being less than spectacular. At a couple of points, the action seems to be dull and muted, but picks up again pretty quickly.

The biggest strike against “Gon” is that the other characters in the first volume are animals from the present time and not some that would have been alive during the age of dinosaurs. This, too, is something that can be easily passed over, especially for younger readers, who would find “Gon” to be worth it for the story and for the price—just $5.99 for about 140 pages.

“Gon” is something that should be enjoyed more than once. Even though you’ll likely be finding yourself slowing down to take in the amazing artwork, it’s still fun to read Gon’s playful personality create mischief a second time.
