Death Note v1
Reviewed by Craig Johnson

'Death Note' is the story of Light, your typical high school all-As student, who discovers a shinigami's (demon-type being) notebook called a death note. Any person who has their name written in this notebook will die via heart attack unless a more creative death is specified in the book itself - so Light takes it upon himself to bring justice to the world by killing murderers and extremely violent criminals.

The deaths of all these criminals doesn't go unnoticed, so Interpol calls in their most intelligent and successful detective, known only as "L". "L" very quickly pieces together many of the clues that Light has inadvertantly left behind - although Light begins to assert his intelligence towards the end of the book and deliberately leaves red herrings to confuse "L" research.

And so the stage is set for a cat and mouse game between Light and L - but which is cat, and which is mouse?

Behind the scenes there's a morality play going on in the readers' mind - if YOU found the Death Note, would you be ethically right to use it to end the lives of those who torment others? How deep would the temptation go to kill someone who really really annoys you? And how could you sleep at night if you killed a violent criminal who subsequently turned out to be innocent?

A darker manga than most, and one which is at the top of the manga game right now.
