Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon v8

Keeping an eye out on the independent/small press companies is always a good idea, because you never know when you'll find a little treasure out there well worth your time and effort. Case in point: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Volume 8.

Truth be told, it really is a rarity when you find a comic (or manga, manhwa or manhua) of a movie or TV Series that's worth raving about. This is one of those rare moments, but maybe that shouldn't be surprising to any of us. Why? Because it's from Andy Seto (who I've previously praised for his work with the manhua Shaolin Soccer).

The end of the second of what seems to be three chapters (which wraps with Volumes 9 to 12) we catch up with the movie as Jen is returned home after being "rescued" from the bandit Dark Cloud Lo… it seems that she was "saved" by her teacher Mr. Gao (and his wife Mrs. Gao)… too bad things can't just end on that happy note, but Mr. Gao is accused of stealing the Books of Sacred Forms and the person investigating said theft happens to be someone who dueled Gao once already (who I think is Chow Yun Fat's character in the movie, though I can't remember). The two end up dueling again, and most of this volume covers that fight which (I am certain) will not end well.

With a visual artwork style that is damn beautiful (with epic battles, beautifully-drawn characters (wow, everyone looks just better drawn) and a nicely-written style to the book (solid writing and visual interpretation of the writing) everything is solid here. A must-have series for the martial arts fan out there, bar none one of the best martial arts themed titles you can find, not to mention one of the best movie/comic interpretations you can find out there as well (which is such a rarity).

Yes, pricewise I am still stinging from a tag of $14 for a 100 or so pages, but in this one instance it's gotta be overlooked as this is a must-have series. BUT… maybe you should do a wee bit of shopping around first if you're buying it online somehow anyway...

Otherwise without a flaw to speak of, this is one of the best martial-arts comics I've seen in a long while, and while it is a bit pricy, you get a great product for the price so you are getting what you pay for. Thus, it is scored high with an A for being the best it can be.
