Claymore v4
Reviewed by Michael Aronson

There we go – a plot is forming.

For whatever reason, Yagi has opted to forego Clare’s story (that which was featured in the first three volumes) and focus entirely on Teresa. Given that Teresa’s a more interesting character, especially given this volume’s turn of events, that’s fine with me.

On one hand, it frustrates me to no end that despite manga creators’ attempts to deliberately break their series into shorter arcs, the people responsible for the collections outright ignore this delineation; volume for contains parts 5 and 6 of the last volume’s story and parts 1 through 4 of a new one. On the other hand, the events at the end of the first arc really kick off the events of the second, as Teresa commits a serious error that warrants the involvement of four other Claymores. Oh, and those four show up together in order to take Teresa down.

As a result, there’s plenty of action with high stakes, and the Claymore world expands by introducing a handful of new characters. While I’m generally not a fan of shonen-style power-level boasting, the entire reason four Claymores have come to deal with Teresa is because of Teresa’s unparalleled abilities, and the means with which the others try to defeat her is crucial to how the action unfolds. The other women aren’t well defined yet, and it’s a little difficult to tell them apart as they all wear the same uniform, but the unique facial features and hair styles just manages to keep them separate.

I’m being a little generous with the grade of an A-, especially since the idea of Claymores fighting Claymores is the kind of theme I’ve grown to hate in western superhero comics, but it’s given the series direction, raised the stakes, and added drama and concern for what happens to this cast. Let’s see how long the momentum holds.
