Minako is best friends with Saki, and the two girls have a dynamic relationship in Erica Sakurazawa: Between the Sheets.

Saki is a free spirit who runs from relationship to relationship and even finds time to date multiple guys at once. Minako, on the other hand, is a devilishly shy girl who learns more and more that her true feelings are for her best friend — Saki.

Yet this revelation brings about unnecessary complications as Minako tries to do what she feels is right to get close to Saki. But the path she takes to do so is not one that can be honorably respected, despite the awkward internal logic used to come about the decision.

In other words, the plot is really, really screwed up. It’s so outlandish, yet not beyond the realm of possibilities, which makes it feel more outlandish. Could someone really be twisted enough to endorse that sort of logic? No doubt there is. That point aside, the plot is well done and the motivations of the characters is readily apparent.

The art is extremely minimalist, to the point where some pages are half white space, but for the most part it works well. At other points, there is a feeling of wanting that’s left, as though the art just isn’t enough. Yet it’s not such a letdown that it takes away from the story at large.

Erica Sakurazawa: Between the Sheets has a unique combination of art and plot that makes it such an interesting read. However, it also takes some imaginativeness to be able to consume it and not question the sanity of it afterward.
