Battle Club v2

Synopsis: Battle Club is back with another hard-hitting round of sweaty action! Mokichi and Higushi are slacking in their training, but things heat up when Tamako faces Kuniko in a curry-eating contest. And just when you think it couldn't get any hotter, the girls visit a hot spring! But the real question in this volume--Who's got the stronger bladder: Tondemon or Taki?

Not too long ago, I wrote a review for Shiozaki's Battle Vixens series in which I pretty much proclaimed it as the last word in Fanservice. After reading Battle Club 1 and 2, though, I stand corrected. I mean, damn... maybe I'm still a naive amateur, but this book is pretty raunchy. There's a lot more T&A;, a lot more crude humor.

But on to the story... There IS a story in here... I think.

Vol 2 kicks off with the protagonist, Tamako - who is the archetypal Shiozaki cute-but-dumb-as-a-brick heroine, battling away in a curry-eating contest. Then, it's off to wrestling class where the girls changing into their tights is covered in almost as much depth as the match itself. At the thrilling conclusion of this match, the stage is set... for another wrestling match. When this orgy of garment shredding ends, Tamako and Mokichi head off to the hot springs (and you know what that means...), where Tamako's encounter with a panda reveals that sometimes she-males show up where you least expect them.

Yes, you read that right.

Overall, Battle Club us a mildly entertaining series, not as good as Battle Vixens, which is currently one of my favorite series. This book does attempt to set up some basic, superficial context to the visuals but it's little more than a 'they're fighting because they don't like each other, now look at some boobs' premise. In the end, what you're left with is a light, mediocre read that is truly just an ode to T&A; and exploding clothes. Now, I don't usually have a problem with that, but in this case I can't help but feel a little pandered to.

Regardless of one's opinion of the cheeky subject matter, though, the artwork is brilliant. Solid lines and great proportions. Shiozaki is honestly one of my favorite artists, and the outstanding visuals here certainly don't disappoint.

In a nutshell: It's ok. It's Battle Vixens with a thinner plot and more nudity.... and a she-male.

Violence/Gore: Blood, beatings... it's a fight series, after all.
Fanservice: I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but a bit too much
