Battle Angel Alita v8: Fallen Angel
Reviewed by Michael Aronson

As if this series was badass enough before, it hits overdrive this time out. Rather than a self-contained story like most of the previous volumes, Fallen Angel actually contains a few distinctly separate stories, all closely related, but each with their own beginning and end points. The result feels like an insanely cool collection of insanely cool stories that max on the momentum in a rush toward the finale.

Oh, confrontation, why must you be so eagerly anticipated and so often anticlimactic in other literary works? Fallen Angel is crammed with them, and they’re all powerfully satisfying. Kaos versus Nova! Kaos versus Den! Den versus Tiphares! Fury versus Alita! Alita versus Alita! Alita versus a face from the past! Lou versus her fears! And the long-awaited return of Ido!

Most of these confrontations are just sick, and I mean that as a great compliment, although they do get fairly messy too. As usual, Alita isn’t afraid to shed a few limbs for the sake of victory, although neither are some of the more mortal characters. Desty Nova’s confrontation with his son isn’t quite as dynamic as the more physical battles, but the imagery involved in revealing Nova’s whereabouts are beautifully brilliant while also strikingly brutal. The battle against Tiphares is both short and sweet, but the stakes involved make it a worthwhile clash. The best moment of the book is probably midway through in Alita’s final move against her opponent – I’d like to get that image blown up and hung on my wall.

Lot of payoff going on, and yet that isn’t stopping Kishiro from throwing new threats into the mix in the penultimate chapter. One particular threat, or should I say twelve threats, seem like a particularly awesome-yet-vicious conflict for the finale. I’m a little skeptical that every question will get answered in the next and last volume, but then there is a sequel series out there. I just hope the ending we get in this series provides some proper closure.
