Angel Sanctuary v1
Reviewed by Kat Collyns

Setsuna Mudo is a high school student with a number of problems. He keeps getting into fights, his parents hate him and he’s in love, in a sexual way, with his little sister. Angel Sanctuary is full of angels and daemons.

Setsuna’s little sister goes to a convent school, religion is everywhere. But no ones trying to convert you, the angels that appear so frequently are no better or worse than the humans or the daemons.

Setsuna has a female angel inside him. Everyone seems to want to awaken her. This is a fantasy manga; heaven and hell are on the brink of war, but everyone has a motive; no side seems any better than the others. The only obviously evil character is Setsuna’s angel’s twin brother, and he’s insane.

The art is unbelievably pretty. There are acres of screen tone and lots of long, flowing hair. It’s shojo (girls comic), so more people and less background. And the people are fantastically (and beautifully) detailed. The plot moves very fast and can be very confusing, so having something pretty to look at while you try to work out what happened is very nice indeed.

What happens is very interesting. This is a long story and there are a lot of characters and the plot doesn’t stay still for a second. There are lots of wings and wires. And who doesn’t love wings? (not so sure about the wires though.).

Other than the confusing-ness of the book there is the fact that some people are bound to be put off by the issues in this manga. Confused gender, a manga staple, is everywhere and there is the incest thing. The incest is handled in a very good way, with one exception, everyone condemns Setsuna, so we don’t.

So, if you don’t get offended easily, like nice art and interesting characters give this one a try.
