About Us

TOPO.com and TOPO! Explorer are products of National Geographic Maps, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Geographic Society. Based in Evergreen, Colorado and Washington D.C., the maps division produces a globe-spanning line of wall maps, travel maps, digital maps, and globes.

National Geographic Maps has been in the forefront of outdoor navigation since 1997 when we acquired Trails Illustrated, then a rapidly growing publisher of topographic hiking maps for the National Parks and Colorado. Today the Trails Illustrated line includes over 160 detailed maps for the United States and a new Adventure Series which covers popular adventure and eco-travel destinations outside the U.S.

In 2000 National Geographic Maps grew again by acquiring Wildflower Productions, the San Francisco based map technology company responsible for TOPO! Interactive Maps on CD-ROM, Trailsmart Software, and the MapMachine Kiosk.

Recently, the Maps division has introduced innovative new products and functionality that aids outdoor enthusiasts of all interests. New Trails Illustrated Explorer 3D software combines the detailed and accurate Trails Illustrated maps with TOPO! functionality. Magellan Triton Series GPS receivers have become the first in the market to load TOPO! maps, not just routes and waypoints.

In early 2008 the Maps division launched this site and the new TOPO! Explorer application, which enables users to not only create custom maps for outdoor recreation, but also to publish maps to our online community, discover recommendations of new places to go, and utilize a new nationwide set of topographic maps and aerial photography.
