  • Google launches Place Search

    Today, Google launched Place Search, a section of its search engine intended to help users find out more about locations. The web service is a compliment to Google’s Android app called “Places,” which uses GPS and Google Maps to help smartphone users find local restaurants, businesses, bars, attractions, hotels, ATMs, Gas Stations, and whatever else they happen to search for in the app. Google added Places to Android devices as part of its Android 2.2 Froyo OS update a couple months back.   • Magazine apps: Adjust to the iPad or fail

    Khoi Vinh, former design editor for the New York Times, is not impressed with the progress magazine app publishers’ have made in their early start. In his blog, Vinh’s main area of contention with magazine apps is that the majority of them aren’t doing anything innovative, instead relying on recreating their print versions for the iPad. “If publishers continue to pursue the print-centric strategies they’re focused on today, I’m willing to bet that most of them will fail,” he says.   • Is Apple developing a carrier-hopping SIM to liberate the iPhone?

    Speculation that Apple is in talks to drop carrier distribution and sell the iPhone directly to consumers is circulating the Web this morning. GigaOm first reported the rumor, claiming that European sources know Apple to be in the process of creating a SIM card that can hop from carrier to carrier, potentially enabling users to purchase iPhones from the Apple Store (including the online store) and use the App Store to choose from among available GSM carriers. Apple is allegedly partnering with SIM card manufacturer Gemalto to develop the technology.
