A Timely Reminder

When I checked my calendar for tomorrow, I saw it there in big bold letters: Mammogram. Surprisingly, the appointment I normally dread for weeks kind of snuck up on me this time around. It’s become a bit of a routine - since my treatment for non-invasive breast cancer almost two years ago, I get checked out on a fairly regular basis. It’s never fun, but these days it does bring me a peace of mind... READ MORE
The Danger's In The Calories

We heard so many trick-or-treat horror stories growing up. Did you?
Razor blades hidden in candied apples. Poisoned candy bars.
Each year our teachers warned us about the perils of trick-or-treating, and clearly our parents believed at least some of these tales, as we were never allowed to eat apples, popcorn balls or any homemade treats we might have gathered in our sacks of loot.
As a child I never... READ MORE
Dress up the Fruit?
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Health on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:59 PM
Make fruit pretty.
That’s what a group of Dutch researchers says we need to do to get children to eat it, after a recent study. They offered two plates of fruit, one with a more visually appealing presentation, and found that children ate an average of twice as much fruit from the prettier plate. Thus, their conclusion: dress fruit up, and kids will eat it.
You can read the whole article here. I’d... READ MORE
Much Ado About the Flu
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:00 AM
Last year, in the midst of the swine flu frenzy we talked about flu shots and faith.
This year, though there seems to be less of a general panic about getting everyone vaccinated against this year’s flu virus, the shots are still on my mind. I was happy to get myself and all of the kids vaccinated at a local drug store last week.
According to Flu.gov, this year’s flu vaccine “protects against an... READ MORE
Pregnant and Unhappy?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 10:00 AM
This week, I received an email that tore at my heart. The writer is a young woman who possibly received a bit of bad NFP instruction and now finds herself pregnant, afraid, and emotionally unprepared. I’m so glad that she wrote me to reach out for support and encouragement. In my reply to her, I shared with her my memories of the day I learned I was pregnant with Eric. Greg was so excited, and... 3 Ways to Eat More Veggies

Being mom (and wife!) to a number of somewhat less than enthusiastic vegetable-eaters, this recent article in the New York Times caught my eye:
Told to Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries
Despite health warnings, endorsements from the First Lady, and multi-million dollar ad campaigns, vegetables have yet to win favored food status in the hearts of most Americans.
“It is disappointing,” said Dr.... READ MORE
Worried about Pertussis?

You’ve probably heard about the whooping cough in California, but did you know it’s in other places too?
When I found out that it’s going around our parish - and that my county has declared a pertussis epidemic - I did more research. I assumed that since my children and my husband and I are all vaccinated, we’d be safe, but I was concerned about what we could do to protect my sister’s newborn.
Did... READ MORE
Appetizer For a No-Meat Friday

I just couldn’t resist. I simply can’t spend the week with you here at Faith & Family Live and not share a recipe. So here it is! Hummus!
Since Friday is traditionally a meatless day for Catholics around the world, this might be the perfect thing to prepare as an appetizer for dinner tonight.
I have to confess, though. This is not my recipe. This comes from my stunningly beautiful wife, Char. Her... READ MORE
How To Help Get Help
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Health on Tuesday, September 07, 2010 3:00 PM
Some time ago a beloved family member entered into severe depression.
We almost lost someone very dear to us.
There is much I’d love to write about the experience but feel I can’t in order to respect privacy.
I will say this though. One of the most frustrating and awful experiences was to watch someone’s personality and behavior change markedly before our eyes and not be able to persuade the person... READ MORE
