Casual Fridays - Crazy, Busy

Getting five days of work done in four days!

How is it already Friday?  As a busy working mom, I’m looking at my “to do” list for this week and realizing that even though the week is almost over, I’ve barely made it through any of the items on my list.

I’ve decided to cut myself a break though, since it seems that this week was even more crazy than usual.  I’m attributing that to Labor Day, and to the fact that a four day work week means cramming... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - On the Road

Looking at the integration of faith, family and work

In this week’s installment of Casual Fridays, I talk about how I personally prepare for business trips.  A few keys for me are taking my morning prayer routine with me, “preplanning” my time as much as possible, checking on the technology that will be available in the places I visit, and leaving a “buffer day” of unscheduled time when I return to my home office.  Does your job take you away from home or the office frequently?  Do you enjoy business travel, or find it overly disruptive?  How do you keep in touch with your family when you’re on the road?  Finally, I’d love to hear your suggestions for upcoming installments of Casual Fridays!

Don't Forget About You

15 Minutes for Mom

During this crazy back-to-school season, many of us moms find ourselves planning schedules, shopping for supplies, and preparing our kids for new fall routines.

It can be easy to lose ourselves in the shuffle.

As much as you are planning your son’s soccer schedule, as much as you are planning your daughter’s violin lessons, as much as you are planning an entire school year full of learning and activity... READ MORE

"Casual Fridays" Returns

Now in video format. Are you suffering from "messy desk syndrome"? What inspires you in the workplace?

You've Got (Too Much) Mail

How do you deal with an overflowing inbox?

I’m happy to be at home, seated in my lovely office after nearly two consecutive weeks of wonderful Catholic travel.  Hugs from my three men and a night in my own bed are the best welcome in the world.  I woke up this morning, ready to take on the day.

And then I logged into my Gmail account, checked Twitter, popped on to Facebook, and felt like going back to bed.

Wow, the stacks of virtual “to do”... READ MORE

Hanging Summer Hopes & Dreams

an easy way to communicate and motivate this summer

What are your family’s hopes and dreams for together time this summer?

Lisa’s recent post about scheduling summer got me thinking about the kinds of activities I hope to fill our summer days with this year.

Then this post at Teach Mama really inspired me. Shouldn’t every family member—even the smallest ones—have a say in our how your family spends its time this summer?

It’s a good idea to have personal... READ MORE

Scheduling Summer

What's on your "to do" list for this summer?

Yesterday, here in San Francisco, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a few hours with fellow Catholic Mom authors Ginny Moyer, Christine Watkins and Julie Paavola.  We spent about three hours meeting, laughing, planning and praying together at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in the heart of the city.  Our time together was fruitful, both because of what we learned from each other and the bonds of... 49 Minutes

Finding more time to spend with our children

An article at Zenit this week grabbed my attention with the following headline:  “Parents: Children Need More Than 49 Minutes”.  The story went on to report about a study done in the United Kingdom in conjunction with National Family Week.  Sadly, the study found that 68% of parents surveyed reported that they spent less than the length of a television drama each day with their children, largely due... Casual Fridays - School's Out, Work's In

How do you handle school vacations when you're a working parent?

In a few weeks, Spring break will be upon us.  For many lucky families, this means a trip to someplace fun or a much needed break.  But for some working parents, school vacation can cause major logistical issues if the kids are out of school but mom and dad still have to be at work.

In my community, some businesses have begun to think creatively about providing solutions for those caught up in this... READ MORE
