A Timely Reminder

Have you had your annual mammogram?

When I checked my calendar for tomorrow, I saw it there in big bold letters: Mammogram.  Surprisingly, the appointment I normally dread for weeks kind of snuck up on me this time around.  It’s become a bit of a routine - since my treatment for non-invasive breast cancer almost two years ago, I get checked out on a fairly regular basis.  It’s never fun, but these days it does bring me a peace of mind... Dress up the Fruit?

Share your opinion!

Make fruit pretty.

That’s what a group of Dutch researchers says we need to do to get children to eat it, after a recent study. They offered two plates of fruit, one with a more visually appealing presentation, and found that children ate an average of twice as much fruit from the prettier plate. Thus, their conclusion: dress fruit up, and kids will eat it.

You can read the whole article here. I’d... READ MORE

3 Ways to Eat More Veggies

Got Vegetables? Many Americans Don't

Being mom (and wife!) to a number of somewhat less than enthusiastic vegetable-eaters, this recent article in the New York Times caught my eye:

Told to Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries

Despite health warnings, endorsements from the First Lady, and multi-million dollar ad campaigns, vegetables have yet to win favored food status in the hearts of most Americans.

“It is disappointing,” said Dr.... READ MORE

Confessions of a Whiny Mom

“I feel like I’ve been whining for two days straight,” I whined to my husband last night as we went to bed.

“You have,” he responded matter-of-factly.

I do have an excuse. I’m sick. Or to give you a better idea of what I’ve been like to live with lately, I should probably say, “I’m siiiiiiiiick ...”

I don’t get sick often. I am sure my family is grateful for this.

This particular illness comes with... READ MORE

Egg Recall

Have you checked yours?

I’m sure many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t: a new outbreak of salmonella poisoning has led to an egg recall.

The FDA has details about it here.

Fitting in Five

Sneaking more fruits and veggies into our diets

Arwen’s lovely veggie post earlier this week left my mouth watering.  Perhaps I was tantalized by the incredible photo of all of those fresh veggies lined up so neatly, just waiting to be roasted.  I felt inspired, and yet when I walked into my kitchen to find something to bake, I lost my motivation.

My search for fresh produce yield three semi rotten apples, an onion, a brown banana, and some raisins... READ MORE

Asperger's and Adolescents

Can you share some input?

This week, I received a note from a mom whose son was recently diagnosed with Asperger’s.  According to the Autism Society of America, “what distinguishes Asperger’s Disorder from Autism Disorder is the severity of the symptoms and the absence of language delays.”

I know the challenges of Autism firsthand, since one of my nephews was diagnosed and is receiving treatment and special education.  He... READ MORE

Fishes Not Delicious

Japan confirms what everybody knows
http://inel.wordpress.com/2007/08/16/kitten-island/

Comedian Jackie Mason has a routine about “acquired tastes.”

If you have to acquire a taste for something, he holds, it’s because it’s yucky.

No one ever has to acquire a taste for potato chips, he notes.

Know why? “‘Cause they’re good!”

I would be the last person to suggest it would be good for your health to follow the “eat only what’s yummy diet” or to permit your kids to do so.

Still, I couldn’t... READ MORE
