Not Science, But…

How have your pregnancies compared?

As of Monday I was six weeks pregnant. It’ll be months until we find out the sex of our baby but I’ve already predicted the sex: girl.

This is not at all scientific, but here’s my “evidence.” During my pregnancy with Camilla, I got hit with all-consuming nausea at 6 weeks and didn’t feel much better until about 18. With Blaise, I didn’t even figure out I was pregnant until 7 weeks, the nausea was... READ MORE

Crafting Can Be Fun!

Right?

Tonight I’m meeting with some neighbor ladies to work on crafts for an upcoming Christmas festival. Is this your cup of tea? It’s not mine!

I go to these crafting gatherings with low expectations (for myself). They aren’t my favorite, but that doesn’t mean it has to be painful. In fact, over the last few years, I have learned that I should have two goals at a gathering where arts and crafts is the... READ MORE

Invasion of the Pillow People

Meet my new friends

The other night, Dan and I were watching a movie in the living room while the kids played quietly in their rooms before bedtime.

At least that was what they were supposed to be doing.

What they were actually doing was creating “pillow people” and setting them up around the house in order to startle us.

It’s frightening how cooperative, stealthy, and quiet all of my children can be when properly motivated.... READ MORE

Mix and (Don't) Match

Do you let little kids pick their own clothes?

Many days, my son wears more than one t-shirt. The first one is covered with yogurt or similar, so he gets a replacement. I can’t remember him ever doing what he did today, though: wearing two regular t-shirts simultaneously.

I got him dressed as usual, picking a cute blue t-shirt. He ripped it off and brought me an orange one from his dresser. Okay, not surprising - he loves bright colors and always... READ MORE

Go Away, Book. Go Away!

Have children's books that make you cringe?

A while ago I asked about children’s books you love, which led to a thread full of suggestions. It’s been very helpful to me on our library visits.

But - as I’m sure we’ve all experienced - not all literature is created equal, even literature for little people.

I always cringe when my daughter heads for the rack of made-from-TV books. You know the ones: books that consist of the storyline and pictures... READ MORE

Bake Up Some Food of the Angels

Happy Feast Day!

Happy Feast of the Arch Angels!

With a Gabrielle, Raphael, and Michael (middle name) in the house, I figure I owe my family a cake today.

And what better cake to serve on the feast of the angels than a heavenly angel food cake? You can make a mix or bake up your own with this simple recipe:

Angel Food Cake

12 eggs
1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar... READ MORE

Life Without Television

How sweet it is

As a mother of five boys, my eye was certainly drawn to Arwen’s post about boys and electronic media . We have a gaming system in our home and when I let the boys cart it out (I keep it under lock and key) it rarely bears good fruit. It’s all fun and games for about ten minutes before the frets set in.

As a family, we do so much better without the glow of the tube, shows, DVD’s and video games included.... READ MORE

Leave the Suitcase in the Closet

How do you feel about the "staycation"?

Today is Monday, but it feels like Saturday.

To be exact, it feels like Saturday after a really long week.

My husband was out of town from dawn on the Friday before last until late this past Saturday night. He was working long hours, mostly out of cell-phone range.

Nine days of that (on top of two week-long trips he took in August) gave me a new respect for military wives.

Here’s the good part:... READ MORE

Perfect Shoes

What are yours?

In a perfect world, I would own a pair of the shoes pictured here. In a perfect world, I would be able to walk in said shoes without looking like my knees were fused. I love these shoes; I suspect they wouldn’t love me back.

But red shoes—that’s where it’s at! I own a pair of red Dansko clogs—Mary Janes even!—and once the weather cools I will wear those shoes everyday until Spring. For me, they are... READ MORE

Dressed for Autumn

What do you wear in the cooler weather?

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.

I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.

One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity... READ MORE
