Get Down the Pounds

Share your secret

A friend of mine recently got the last 15 pounds off to reach her goal weight. She hasn’t looked this trim since before she started having kids (13 years ago) and when I asked her how she did it, she had two words: Weight Watchers.

My friend, like me, has gotten to an age where keeping track of food intake is just as important as exercise, at least where weight loss is concerned. In my twenties, I... READ MORE

Mind Games

Are you a mental giant?

I came across an article recently that touted the importance of brain exercises for retaining information and longevity. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I read this article, which obviously means I need to be doing whatever it was they said to do in the first place.

There are tremendous benefits, said the article, to these kinds of mental exercise—things like doing the crossword or Soduku. The... READ MORE

Fitness Fans and Mamas Movin'

winner of our recent giveaway

The randomly drawn winner of our Mamas Movin’ With Mary shirt giveaway is Sharon, who shared this fitness goal:

“I want to get the bike I got for Mother’s Day out of the garage and ride it regularly.  I want to get back on the elliptical I haven’t touched for months.  A friend invited me to start running with a group of friends twice a week; maybe this shirt will help motivate me to get me moving again!  As for prayer, I want to make sure I pray the Rosary EVERY day, even if it means getting up a few minutes earlier in the morning, or turning off the radio when I’m in the car.  Thanks for the cool contest! smile

Thanks to the Mamas for sponsoring this giveaway and congrats to Sharon—we hope the shirt helps you reach your goals!

Mamas Moving With Mary

and a giveaway too!

***UPDATE: Contest is now over and comments are closed. I will post the winner’s name shortly!

Do you ever think it’s too hard for a mom to find regular time for fitness and prayer? Well, here’s an inspiring story of some moms who made fitness and prayer a priority—with great results!

Mamas Movin’ With Mary started when three Catholic moms decided to get together regularly with the goal of training... READ MORE

Getting Moving

How to make time for exercise?

This is my current exercise program: nothing.

I don’t live a totally sedentary lifestyle. Keeping up with my kids and running a household means that I get a fair amount of physical activity. Thanks to my 27-lb toddler, I think my biceps are currently stronger than they’ve ever been.

More exercise in my life would be good, though. I know I’m happier when I’m in better shape. I’ve noticed that on days... READ MORE

Spring Forth With Fitness and Style

My picks for maternity workout wear

Hello ladies,

Has spring sprung in your neck of the woods yet? After a winter of record lows the South finally seems to be thawing out. The sun is shining, flowers are blooming and I am itching to get outside to stretch my legs a bit.

Most of my maternity clothes were bought when I was pregnant with my first child and since I am now pregnant with my fifth child most of them are sorely in need of... READ MORE

5 Ways to Motivate Your Workout

a Monday morning shove in the right direction

It’s Monday morning. Do you have a plan for exercising today?

This time of year, I often find myself dreaming of hibernating instead of pulling on a pair of sneakers.

But especially during these dark, cold days of winter, I find that I need the mood boost that comes with exercise. Today, I thought we could share some ideas to keep ourselves motivated toward fitness. Here are some of mine:

1. Find... READ MORE

You Go, Girl!

a sweet little run-in

This summer when I found out I was pregnant, I was in the throes of half-marathon training. The week before hearing our exciting news, I had done 10 miles of the 13.1 mile course. This was the longest I had ever gone and I loved it!

Very early in the pregnancy, I considered keeping up my training. I thought I might be able to run, at least for a while. But then I felt really tired and a little sick.... READ MORE

80 Minutes A Week

Visceral Fat from uabnews on Vimeo.

80 minutes of exercise a week may not be enough to make you slender, but it is probably enough to keep visceral fat—the kind that is a major contributor to Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease—at bay.

What’s also good news is that to keep your internal organs (but, alas, not your thighs) fat-free, it doesn’t seem to matter whether you do cardio or strength-training.

It takes an apple a day to keep the doctor away.

But heart disease you can keep away with 40 minutes, twice a week

My Favorite Workout Machine

How the Gazelle Edge saved my knees

I am so grateful to Lisa for opening up the conversation about fitness frustrations.

I was just waiting for an excuse to share about my favorite piece of fitness equipment ever: my beloved Gazelle Edge.

A couple of years ago, when I tried to get back into the habit of running for fitness after Daniel was born, I quickly became a cripple.

After about two weeks of daily running, my knee, hip, and ankle... READ MORE
