Dress up the Fruit?

Make fruit pretty.
That’s what a group of Dutch researchers says we need to do to get children to eat it, after a recent study. They offered two plates of fruit, one with a more visually appealing presentation, and found that children ate an average of twice as much fruit from the prettier plate. Thus, their conclusion: dress fruit up, and kids will eat it.

Writing My Own Story

I have several friends who like blogs, but don’t read ones written by other Catholic mothers.
“I can’t take the pressure,” they say. “Their lives look so perfect, and it makes me feel badly that mine’s not like that.”
Personally, I do read - and am inspired by - blogs by other Catholic moms. But I understand my friends’ point of view. It can be intimidating.
I’ve been part of the Internet community... READ MORE

My daughter is cautious to a degree that often frustrates me. She freezes if she senses that something might be uncomfortable or hard or scary. Even if we know she’ll enjoy something, we still have to coax her to try it. Nearly always we’re right and she loves it. That doesn’t mean she trusts us unthinkingly the next time. She’s less hyper-cautious than she used to be but progress is slow.
I watch... READ MORE

Many days, my son wears more than one t-shirt. The first one is covered with yogurt or similar, so he gets a replacement. I can’t remember him ever doing what he did today, though: wearing two regular t-shirts simultaneously.
I got him dressed as usual, picking a cute blue t-shirt. He ripped it off and brought me an orange one from his dresser. Okay, not surprising - he loves bright colors and always... READ MORE
Little Musicians

My daughter’s birthday is coming up, and she wants a drum.
It takes little to push me into audio-overload, so the idea of a drum makes me cringe, but I want to support her desire to have more music in her life.
(I hope she appreciates that I give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that it’s more music she wants. Even though, being almost-four, what she probably wants is not more music but more... READ MORE
Dressed for Autumn

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.
I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.
One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity... READ MORE
Tackling Toy Turmoil

I feel blessed because in our current house with our current sleeping situation, we’re able to have a play room.
It’s great having a room that’s completely dedicated to housing the toys. It makes tidying up easy, as I can just toss toys in there as I find them.
But I’m telling you, that room is a pit. Most of the time, it’s nearly impossible to walk across it without maiming yourself on a small piece... READ MORE
Cool It

When I was a kid we did not have air conditioning in our [century-old] house, and I couldn’t see why anyone would need it.
Hot days were for swimming and running in the sprinkler and eating popsicles, which kept me cool enough. If I felt like staying inside, I’d lie on the floor directly in front of a box fan set to high, reading and sipping iced tea.
See? Air-conditioning was totally unnecessary... READ MORE
Buying Water

I’m loving reading everyone’s responses to Rachel’s post about grocery shopping. There’s so much variety. Fun!
My own response is that I know it’s time for a grocery store trip when we’re running low on juice, milk, or water. But as I wrote that I realized it might seem weird. How can you run low on water, especially when you live in the Great Lakes State?
Here’s how: we buy water.
It is neither frugal... READ MORE

Our little guy is sick. We’re currently on day six of a respiratory illness that I’m suspicious is RSV. While I’m glad not to be in the hospital this time, we still ended up in urgent care this past weekend, where Blaise was diagnosed with croup and an ear infection.
He’s running an on-and-off fever and is not his usual energetic self, which means we’re having some slow days around here. Today Blaise... READ MORE
