Casual Fridays - Data Tsunami

Are you being washed away by too much information?
This week, I saw an interesting report on six technology trends proposed by the FutureMedia Conference at Georgia Tech.  The trend that most hit me was the first one, which they are calling “Data Tsunami”.  Conferences organizers reported that between now and 2020, an amazing 35 trillion gigabytes of information will have been created and replicated around the world.  With all of this information hitting us at home and in the workplace, do you feel overwhelmed by all of the data in your life or are you managing to ride the wave?  I’ll give my answer in the comments below but I’d love to hear from you too!

Casual Fridays - Killer Commute?

Is your drive a time of blessing or a time of terror?
After having the last two years “off”, I’m back to playing school bus driver with my teenage son Adam, who’s about to turn 16.  For the past two years, Eric drove to school in the morning but now that he’s off to school, I find myself commuting again.  The difference now is that Adam is behind the wheel, learning to drive, and I’m the stressed out “supervisor” in the passenger seat.  I noticed last week that while Adam’s doing a great job, our morning commute is starting to take a toll on my attitude.  Rather than heading off to work refreshed and ready, I’m often grumpy, frazzled and short-tempered.  It’s not good for either of us, and a bad way to start a productive day.  Something needs to change, so on this week’s installment of our “Casual Fridays” series, I’m looking for your input.  How do you use your morning commute?  Do you sing, pray, chat, or just enjoy a bit of peace and quiet?  Are you talking on the phone, texting (danger!), planning your day mentally, or yelling at the guy in the car in front of you?  Are your morning and evening commutes peaceful, or pathetic?  Tell me about it - and while you’re at it give me your suggestions for how Adam and I can get our day off to a healthier start.

Casual Fridays - Dinner Again?

Do you struggle with mealtime?

This week, inspired by my good friend Jeff Young the “Catholic Foodie”, we take on the topic of dinner.  Almost every mom I know struggles sometimes with getting a good, balanced dinner on the table night after night, and this can feel like even more of a chore after a long day of work.  This video was shot and edited on my cell phone, in my pantry, and I want to know if you face the same “dinnertime dilemmas” that I do.  What to serve, how to get it cooked in time to avoid the snackers, and why my family won’t just enjoy a bowl of cereal and call it dinner (just kidding!).  Does dinnertime bum you out, or unleash your inner chef?  What types of foods do you keep on hand for those moments when you’re too tired to come up with something creative?  Do you have a “go to” meal that’s sure to satisfy in a pinch?  Tell us about it!

Casual Fridays - Crazy, Busy

Getting five days of work done in four days!

How is it already Friday?  As a busy working mom, I’m looking at my “to do” list for this week and realizing that even though the week is almost over, I’ve barely made it through any of the items on my list.

I’ve decided to cut myself a break though, since it seems that this week was even more crazy than usual.  I’m attributing that to Labor Day, and to the fact that a four day work week means cramming... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - On the Road

Looking at the integration of faith, family and work

In this week’s installment of Casual Fridays, I talk about how I personally prepare for business trips.  A few keys for me are taking my morning prayer routine with me, “preplanning” my time as much as possible, checking on the technology that will be available in the places I visit, and leaving a “buffer day” of unscheduled time when I return to my home office.  Does your job take you away from home or the office frequently?  Do you enjoy business travel, or find it overly disruptive?  How do you keep in touch with your family when you’re on the road?  Finally, I’d love to hear your suggestions for upcoming installments of Casual Fridays!

"Casual Fridays" Returns

Now in video format. Are you suffering from "messy desk syndrome"? What inspires you in the workplace?

Casual Fridays - There's a Saint for That

Who is your occupational patron saint?

I woke up this morning later than planned and in a bit of a frenzy.  In the darkness, I stumbled to my home office sleepily and was met by my usual stacks of work.  I’m a stacker - I tend to be a visual organizer and prefer to keep things on or near my desk until they are completed.  Today, the stacks are especially high since I’m hoping to take Holy Week offline.  That will require a great deal of... Casual Fridays - Wavers: Love Them or Hate Them?

This week's career post looks at an increasingly popular second job - the "Roadside Marketer"

Around my house, we call them “human billboards” and they jury is split on their merit.  I will admit to hating them—and even to refusing to do business with anyone who employs them.  My sons, on the other hand, think they are cool “entrepreneurs” and wouldn’t hesitate to do this type of work that is said to pay pretty well.  This little video gave me a slightly different perspective:

Honestly, I... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - Above and Beyond

Do you go the extra mile in your work?

I want to send a special hank you to Daniel, the twenty-something year old miracle worker who inspired this week’s installment of Casual Fridays.  Honestly, sometimes one of the most difficult parts of blogging is coming up with good ideas.  It’s always amazing to me how the Holy Spirit sends me people like Daniel when I’m feeling most “brain dead” and uninspired…coincidence?  I think not.

Yesterday,... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - School's Out, Work's In

How do you handle school vacations when you're a working parent?

In a few weeks, Spring break will be upon us.  For many lucky families, this means a trip to someplace fun or a much needed break.  But for some working parents, school vacation can cause major logistical issues if the kids are out of school but mom and dad still have to be at work.

In my community, some businesses have begun to think creatively about providing solutions for those caught up in this... READ MORE
