Can Your Baby Read?

Maybe she doesn't need to

Having seen the “Your Baby Can Read” commercials, I was interested to read what some experts are saying about teach-your-baby-to-read programs like this one on the Today show earlier this week.

Basically, what they say is this: Babies memorize the look of words on th flashcards, but it’s not really reading. It’s memorizing.

Early reading is something that fascinates me. I really enjoy teaching kids... READ MORE

"Mommy Brain" Better

Research shows giving birth leads to more grey matter

Here’s some good news for moms: giving birth may make your brain grow!

Some new research published by the American Psychological Association found that grey matter volume of the 19 new mothers studied “increased by a small but significant amount.”

I’m no scientist (as yesterday’s post proved, ha!) so I can’t critique this research, but I enjoyed reading about the possibility that our bodies might actually build our brains up in order to equip us to take care of new babies. How cool is that?

You can read more details here.

Not Science, But…

How have your pregnancies compared?

As of Monday I was six weeks pregnant. It’ll be months until we find out the sex of our baby but I’ve already predicted the sex: girl.

This is not at all scientific, but here’s my “evidence.” During my pregnancy with Camilla, I got hit with all-consuming nausea at 6 weeks and didn’t feel much better until about 18. With Blaise, I didn’t even figure out I was pregnant until 7 weeks, the nausea was... READ MORE

A Tiny Big Deal

exciting news!

Did you listen to today’s podcast yet? If so, you heard my exciting announcement. If not, you’d better listen to find out what it is!

Just kidding. I wouldn’t do that to you.

We’re thrilled (and exhausted) at the Mosher household this month, because we found out that baby #3 is on the way.

I know!!!!

Because it happened very quickly compared to my other pregnancies, we were surprised. Honestly, my... READ MORE

A Small Prayer Answered

St. Jude comes through for the little guy

Our son is not a good sleeper, and it has exhausted my husband and me.

For months we tried every trick we knew and many that we invented on the spot. We made progress, but not enough. We were exhausted from being up multiple times every night, sometimes for multiple hours.

It was manageable - with positive attitudes and taking shifts, we coped - but it was not fun.

We prayed about Blaise’s sleep... READ MORE

Double the Fun!

Double the everything

One of my very dearest friends just found out she is pregnant with her sixth and seventh baby. Twins!

She is excited and nervous and a whole host of other emotions as well. Mostly, she’s amazed. Having twins is way more than just one baby times two.

I told my friend I would ask all of you, our dear readers, to send her way whatever practical tips or suggestions you have. She has questions like: what... READ MORE

S Is For Sweet

Time to Shop for Baby Fashions

Hi ladies!

Thank you so much for the many prayers before, during and after the birth of my little one! They meant the world to me! I’ve missed you guys and am so glad to be back! Having said that, I am just a tiny bit sleep-deprived so you will forgive me if my grammar, spelling, and/or clarity leaves something to be desired. Yawn…

Anyway, on to the fashion…

Since I’m currently living in the land... READ MORE

Boy or Girl? Do You Find Out?

and a cute way one mom "surprised" herself

No, I’m not pregnant. Stop yourselves right now.

But this cute story about a blogger’s original way of finding out her unborn baby’s sex sure did make me smile.

It made me think some more about finding out a baby’s sex before birth. With each of our eight pregnancies, Dan and I have never opted to learn the baby’s sex ahead of time. He’s just old fashioned like that. I say “he” because Dan has always... READ MORE
