Soul to Soul Conversations
by Mary DeTurris Poust in Faith on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 6:00 AM
We live in age when we can strike up a new friendship with the click of a mouse, when our “friends,” many of whom we’ve never even met, can number into the hundreds, or even thousands, thanks to social networking. Yet despite all the connections and links and “likes” about everything from what we cooked for dinner last night to our latest work project, most people are hungry for something more.
We can have 395 Facebook friends and still feel lonely. We can “talk” to people all day in an almost constant... READ MORE
Making the Time
by Joseph Pronechen in Faith on Monday, November 15, 2010 6:00 AM
When St. Paul instructed his readers to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), he meant the same for us. But how can we do that in a busy day? Gary Zimak found the answer.
And when Pope Benedict XVI said in his apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis that the Eucharist is a mystery to be believed, celebrated and lived, just how do we live it? Jesuit Father James Kubicki knows.
The Morning Offering is the answer.
“The Morning Offering is a simple yet profound prayer,” notes Father Kubicki.... READ MORE
Tough Hope as Ordinary Time Ends
by Tom and April Hoopes in Faith on Friday, November 12, 2010 6:00 AM

The American Conference of Cantors has been invited to participate in a mission to the Vatican Nov. 14-18. Sixteen cantors from the Jewish organization will meet with Pope Benedict XVI, cardinals, Vatican officials and seminarians from the North American College. Cantor Mark Goldman, from Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in Plantation, Fla., said, “This will be a moment to cherish in my life, a night different from all other nights. I... READ MORE
They Will Bear You Up
by Pat Gohn in Faith on Monday, November 08, 2010 6:00 AM
Psalm 91 declares: “For [the Lord] will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
A couple things are learned by examining those verses:
Angels actually exist. They are not mythical creatures in a fairy tale.
The Lord has these angels at his command, and he willingly dispatches them to guard you. The common Catholic parlance for these supernatural friends are “guardian angels.”
As stated in our previous article,... READ MORE
Our Souls Know Better
by Heidi Bratton in Faith on Wednesday, November 03, 2010 6:00 AM
My cleaning spree started with the long-overdue decision to throw out a box of cassette tapes. It ended four days later with the removal from our house of nine trash bags of garbage, two ancient computers, one broken TV, six bags of goods to donate, and four bins of baby stuff to return to a generous friend.
The result? Four completely cleaned out and newly functional areas of our home. Phew! The sorting, bagging, and hauling were grueling, but getting my house back was worth the effort.
I was... READ MORE
Soul Prayer
by Joseph Pronechen in Faith on Monday, November 01, 2010 6:00 AM
Every Nov. 2, the Church remembers the faithful departed in a special way on All Souls’ Day and dedicates the whole month to the holy souls in purgatory. After that, we sometimes forget that the Church urges us to pray for them all year.
Susan Tassone’s one-woman mission and ministry is to help everyone know the whys and the how-tos of helping those in purgatory. Little wonder she’s affectionately called the “purgatory lady.”
That nickname came during her appearances on EWTN’s “The Abundant Life”... READ MORE
Saints, Souls and Zacchaeus

Oct. 31: Halloween on a Sunday can be an excellent opportunity to put the day in perspective.
All Hallows’ Eve is the vigil of All Saints’ Day — and Sunday in the Church is a recollection of the first Easter, the day Christ rose from the dead.

What I Saw In the Chapel
by Marion Fernandez-Cueto in Faith on Monday, October 25, 2010 6:00 AM
In September, the Pew Research Forum on Religion and Public Life released a study about religious knowledge in the United Sates. One of the more sobering results: more than 45% of Catholics are not aware the Church teaches that bread and wine used at Mass are not mere symbols, but actually become the Body and Blood of Christ at consecration.
I am a convert who entered the Church solely for the Eucharist, and while that decision has since been grounded in a deeper appreciation for the entirety of... READ MORE
There's Something About Mary
by Eddie O'Neill in Faith on Friday, October 22, 2010 6:00 AM
It’s October: the month dedicated to Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. While the number of official Church-approved apparitions of the Blessed Mother can be counted with just two digits, stories of our heavenly Mother’s love and intercession in the lives of everyday people abound.
Just ask Cheri Lomonte. Since 2007, she has co-hosted “Mary’s Touch,” a half-hour national radio program that highlights the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in people’s lives.
“Our hope is that the show reminds people... READ MORE
Coffee, Tea, God & Me
by Heidi Bratton in Faith on Monday, October 18, 2010 6:00 AM
Tea is a stranger to me. Coffee is an old friend. Coffee tastes like comfort and feels like being connected. Coffee smells like relaxation and looks like afternoon sunlight. This cozy relationship is a bit of a problem for me, however, because for health reasons I am supposed to learn to embrace a cup of herbal tea more often than one of coffee.
I didn’t set out to love coffee. In fact, it took me several years, several lumps of sugar, and a lot of cream to warm up to its bitterness. My love... READ MORE
