Scan or Pat Down?

Which would you choose?

I’m scheduled to fly on Monday and am already dreading the long lines and crowds that I know will take place during the holiday week of travel.  To make matters worse, everyone seems to be talking about the recent changes in TSA screening, the backscatter and millimeter wave scanning units, and the newly changed “pat down” procedures.

I unknowingly have been screened at least twice in recent memory... READ MORE

National Council of Catholic Women

Are you a member?

Today’s post comes to you from our nation’s capital, where I have the pleasure of joining my good friend Jeff Young in speaking for the annual convention of the National Council of Catholic Women.  It’s been such a joy to be in a hotel filled to the brim with amazing Catholic ladies, here to be encouraged in the important work they do in their home dioceses to support Catholic women.  A bit about... Matt Maher and Me

This week, I am lucky enough to find myself in Dallas for the University of Dallas Ministry Conference.  Yesterday’s many highlights included two favorite moments: hearing a keynote by blogger Rocco Palmo of Whispers in the Loggia and finding myself in the front row at the Matt Maher concert.  We’ve already discussed my Matt Maher fangirl status (shared by many of my F&F soul sisters), but I have to say he gets better every time I hear him.  This little video, shot on my iPhone, isn’t top quality but will give you five minutes of sheer joy!  At the end of the night, I was even treated to a major celebration as the Rangers won their game and are now headed to the World Series.  The conference continues today, so please pray for all of those gathered here in Dallas who are working to share, deepen, and learn more about their faith.

Come Say Hi to Me Too!

For Boston area friends!

After you’ve finished visiting with Rachel tomorrow in Athens, head North and come see me if you find yourself anywhere near Boston!  On Sunday, October 17 the wonderful Pat Gohn (of Among Women and a regular F&F contributor) will be hanging out at John Harvard’s in Cambridge from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and then heading to 5:00 Mass at St. Paul’s Parish in Cambridge.  This is a casual “come as you are”... Do You Road Trip?

Help a mom out!

A while ago, we had a podcast chat about traveling with young children, and I mentioned that we’d yet to take a long road trip with our kids. When traveling more than half-a-day’s drive away, we always fly.

That’s about to change. On Thursday, we’re loading the car and driving to stay with Blaise’s godparents in Virginia, a ten-hour drive from here.

I’m excited for our vacation. I’m happy about all... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - Who's On Your Support Team?

Who helps you when you need extra hands?

This week, I’ve been down in South Pasadena doing a few speaking sessions with the Women’s Connection at the wonderful Holy Family Parish.  While I’ve been here, my darling teenager has been under the capable supervision of my mother in law Norma, who lives just a few blocks away from us.  Coincidentally, Norma works less than a mile away from Adam’s high school and their work/school hours are nearly... Casual Fridays - On the Road

Looking at the integration of faith, family and work

In this week’s installment of Casual Fridays, I talk about how I personally prepare for business trips.  A few keys for me are taking my morning prayer routine with me, “preplanning” my time as much as possible, checking on the technology that will be available in the places I visit, and leaving a “buffer day” of unscheduled time when I return to my home office.  Does your job take you away from home or the office frequently?  Do you enjoy business travel, or find it overly disruptive?  How do you keep in touch with your family when you’re on the road?  Finally, I’d love to hear your suggestions for upcoming installments of Casual Fridays!
