The Tyler Tragedy

How can we avoid future cruelty with computers?

As the resident geek here at Faith & Family, I have been praying since the middle of the night Wednesday about how to respond to the horrific story of Rutgers Freshman Tyler Clementi and his tragic suicide.  Let me first of all offer prayers for the repose of Tyler and for his family and friends, who can know no greater loss than the death of a loved one.

My first reaction to this story, and the one... READ MORE

What Your Kids Will Be Wanting Soon

Today's "Stevenote" offered a few goodies

If you’re not a geek, you likely didn’t even know that today was the “Stevenote” - a major Apple announcement of some new devices, software and other goodies that we geeks can’t seem to get enough of.  These famous keynote speeches have Apple fanboys (and fanmoms) tuned in online and Tweeting away before, during and after the talk.

Today’s announcements largely centered around upgrades to the iPod... READ MORE

Catholic Classics Go Digital

Which books would you like to have always at the ready?

Danielle recently shared with us the good news that her wonderful book, Small Steps for Catholic Moms, co-authored with the lovely Elizabeth Foss, is now available in Kindle version.  On the heels of this announcement, our good friend Ian Rutherford of Aquinas and More announced that we can now purchase many wonderful Catholic classics in “e reader” format

Even if you don’t have an e-reading device,... READ MORE

Book Bash!

Meeting up with some new Soul Sisters!

As Danielle and Rachel can probably tell you, living out the dream of writing and publishing your first book is an amazing ride.  My book came out in February, and I still get a giddy sensation every time I have a book-related experience.  It’s so bad that a few weeks ago, I saw someone at a conference walking through a hallway with my book tucked under his arm, and I literally had to restrain myself... Lunchtime Innovation

A sandwich in a can: what do you think?

Have you seen this?

From an MSNBC article about the Candwich: “the reaction [the inventor] typically gets the first time people hear about his invention: ‘Ewwwwwwww.’”

I can fully relate. A sandwich in a can? The idea kind of grosses me out.

They’re not available for purchase yet, but you can see the website here. It says there will be two flavors of peanut butter and jelly, along with BBQ chicken, which alarms me. At least peanut butter and jelly are shelf-stable ingredients in their own right. Chicken, not so much.

I have to say, though, that if this product does hit the shelves, I might find myself buying one just to see what it tastes like. I can only imagine.

What do you think about the Candwich?

Books on Screen

E-readers: yea or nay?

I’m a book lover, and I can’t imagine ever completely giving up the joy of holding a book in my hands and turning pages.

That being said, I’m fascinated by the concept of e-readers. Amazon.com’s Kindle seems to be the most widely known, although there are many available. You can see some reviews here.

Apple also has its iPad, which functions as an e-reader, and my youngest brother has one and does... READ MORE

Does the Internet Affect Your Prayer Life?

Fr. James Martin Makes a Point

First of all, can I just say how happy I am to see Fr. James Martin writing for the Huffington Post? His words are always a breath of fresh air to this mom who finds most other entries there discouraging, if not disturbing, to Catholic thinkers.

His latest, Does E-Mail Make It Harder to Pray? How the Digital Age Is Changing Spiritual Life, is no exception.

There’s been a lot of online talk about the... READ MORE

Apple - Moral Police?

Do you trust a company to provide a "porn free" environment for your family?

An article this week on Catholic Online caught my eye.  The title splashed across the page read, “Steve Jobs says ‘No Porn’ for iPhone and iPad Apps”.  It went on to detail recent statements by Steve Jobs confirming that Apple is actively seeking to keep its iTunes Store a place that will offer “freedom from porn”.

I knew I like Steve, but I thought it was mostly for my affinity for his geeky tech... READ MORE

F&F Looks Good on Any Screen

Especially on my new iPad!

Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for Lisa Hendey to get any geekier than she already is, I’ve gone and done it.  Actually, my husband did it for me!  On Sunday night, after my weekend book tour with my mom (four cities, four bookstores in four days), he and the boys presented me with my Mother’s Day/Early Birthday gift - a new iPad.  I guess he’s heard all of the hints I’ve been dropping for... Hello Baby!

A cool new iPad app makes great use of technology

If I were a pregnant iPad owner, (or an iPad owner with a pregnant friend or family member!), I’d be headed over to the iTunes store pronto to download the great Hello Baby Pregnancy Calendar app that’s available free of charge from P&G Productions.

Since I don’t own an iPad (yet…), I am unable to give you a thorough review of the product, but on paper it looks like a winner.  Here are some of the... READ MORE
