A Rose from the Flower

and her prayers, too

The feast of the Little Flower is almost over, and in case you didn’t get a rose today, here’s one. I wish I could give every reader a real rose, but virtual will have to do.

St. Therese is my sister’s patroness and ever since I read Story of a Soul in college, I’ve felt an affinity for her too. Today I asked her to say special prayers for all of our Faith & Family readers. I hope that you will feel God’s love through her in an extraordinary way.

Happy Feast of St. Therese!

Wisdom of the Child

My toddler sets me straight

This afternoon I was having a momentary freak-out, end-of-day flash of melt that wasn’t pretty. Not at all. It was just one of those split-second flashes where the reality of the situation was greatly overshadowed by my annoyance and also the number of discarded shoes left on the front-room floor. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of life but actually yes totally a very big deal.

Because everyone... READ MORE

College Roll Call

Who's going where? Adopt a college kid to pray for today!

I’ve been majorly preoccupied the past few days with the launching of my son Eric off to college.  I’ll be sure to continue to share insights on that during the next few days here on the blog - we leave tonight to drive to San Francisco.  Early tomorrow morning, we’ll put Eric on a plane to Boston, where he’ll be attending pre-orientation at Harvard.  Then next Tuesday, Greg and I will fly out to... How Pleasant To Know Fr. Schall

Since his friend George Weigel let the cat out of the bag last week that James Schall, SJ, is recovering from surgery, I feel liberated to ask for your prayers for him here, too.

I’m one of his many former students who absolutely adore the man, for all the reasons Weigel captures admirably in this tribute.

Father has been, as he puts it, “pretty well butchered” by surgery for cancer of the jaw (which they fix by taking part of your leg bone).

I was shocked to hear the news earlier this summer, as I’d seen him only the week before the surgery and nothing seemed amiss. They found the cancer during a dentist appointment.

I would appreciate your prayers for his recovery!

Back Among the Living

or trying to be!

Hello dear readers! This is just a quick note to say I’ve missed you and things are going great and I’m looking forward to being around here again. I’m starting back with just a quick note, instead of trying to shoot the moon with in-depth ponderings.

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day—and for any readers who are desperately wanting to be mothers, special prayers that God will answer the desires... READ MORE

God is Everywhere

especially in the details

My husband and older boys are going on a camping trip this weekend, the preparations for which have now become my full-time job.

I spent over two hours this morning looking for long john underwear in stores that are now prominently featuring bathing suits. Cold weather clothes were nowhere to be found.

But somehow I managed to squeeze blood from a turnip. I circled and double-backed and picked through... READ MORE

Rosary Issue?

April: This issue of Faith & Family is a Rosary theme issue. By mistake.

We didn’t intend for this to be a Rosary-themed issue. The way we planned it, we expected to highlight other themes:

Family Communication. “Yell No More” is Daria Sockey’s excellent article about communicating — quietly — with kids (page 26). “Unlocking Your Ears” is about listening to what your spouse is communicating to you... READ MORE

Kindness Is The Best Surprise

...but it's not random
fra angelico

I love Christianity!

Let me explain what’s got me exulting in this Pollyanna fashion.

A person I’ve never met did the nicest thing for me yesterday. I’ll keep him anonymous so as not to embarrass him, especially without his permission, but it involves an author and blogger I’m sure at least some of you would recognize.

About a year ago this gentleman posted a request for prayers for a priest friend... READ MORE

Building the Priesthood

we can all foster vocations

Rebecca’s discussion of the upcoming Year of the Priest reminded me of an article I read in the National Catholic Register a few years ago.

In it, Register senior writer Tim Drake looked at a recent surge in vocations, and noted several dioceses that seem to be especially thriving. Of course, one of the reasons I remember the article so well is that my own diocese, The Diocese of Savannah, was featured... READ MORE

Offer It Up!

Our pain equals your gain

Two weeks from tomorrow, we go back to the doctor. Two weeks doesn’t sound like all that long unless you had been mentally geared up for ONE week.

A few weeks ago, I got a call from the cast clinic to set up our next appointment. Six weeks from accident date would be sometime next week, but the nurse was telling me the doctor wanted to see us the following week. That extra week, seven days, was just... READ MORE
