Writing My Own Story

The lesson of vocation

I have several friends who like blogs, but don’t read ones written by other Catholic mothers.

“I can’t take the pressure,” they say. “Their lives look so perfect, and it makes me feel badly that mine’s not like that.”

Personally, I do read - and am inspired by - blogs by other Catholic moms. But I understand my friends’ point of view. It can be intimidating.

I’ve been part of the Internet community... READ MORE

Got Saints? We do!

Six new saints for the Catholic Church
Celebratory display at our parish

Well, this was an exciting weekend! I feel like everyone should congratulate me. Here’s the news: Our parish’s official name went from Blessed André Bessette to Saint André Bessette.

Yesterday, Pope Benedict celebrated the canonization Mass for André Bessette, along with five other new saints.

I am thrilled to have St. André Bessette as our parish patron because he has local ties to New Hampshire... READ MORE

Pretty for Fall

needing autumn decoration inspiration

In 2008 we went on vacation in the beginning of October and I loved the lobby of the hotel where we stayed. It felt incredibly cozy to me. It took me a while to figure out why: it was decorated for fall.

I really like to be out and about during December, when holiday decorations are up. The whole world feels cozy and Christmas-y then, even if it is actually Advent. I love the feel of my own house... READ MORE

House Beautiful

but never perfect

I made a mistake today.

In an effort to get some inspiration, I pulled out my three-ring binder of “good ideas”—the one with pages torn out of magazines, things I come across that inspire me and make me want to create beauty and peace in my home.

Unfortunately, between post-vacation fatigue and the Georgia heat and humidity, dragging out all those pictures of magazine-perfect rooms just made me feel... READ MORE

Cookie Girl

Something to help you smile on Friday

I remember hearing this song “debuted” for the very first time on the great On The U college podcast a few years ago.  The catchy tune may distract you from the somewhat “deep” message embedded in all of the fun - if we’re constantly looking around us for something better, we may turn into a “Cookie Girl”.  Being in search of greater things isn’t always healthy for us! If I’m being honest, I’ll admit to being a “Cookie Girl” who sometimes falls prey to the “grass is always greener” syndrome rather than counting the blessings that are right in front of me. Kudos to Whitney, a Catholic college student and the creative genius who turned a college cafeteria chat into her own music video.  I hope this is just the first of many!

Precious Treasures

Savoring the sweet...

Last night, I spent a wonderful evening in the company of the moms ministry group at St. Clement Catholic Church here in Chicago.  Twenty moms were able to rouse the energy and enthusiasm and take the evening off for my talk on “Self Care for Moms”.  The parish has many wonderful ministries for young families, this one included.  I was so impressed by the way in which this group of women encourages... Do You Support Charity as a Family?

Please share your story with Faith & Family

In an upcoming issue of Faith & Family magazine, we are going to be focusing on some of the creative and inspiring ways Catholic families support charity together.

Does your family do volunteer work or fundraising for a special cause? Have you ever participated as a family in a particularly successful or satisfying charity project? We would love to hear about it! .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) a summary of your experience and I will pass it along to Patrick Novecosky, the writer working on the story.

Last Minute Lenten Ideas

From My Facebook Peeps, With Love

In addition to the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge, we have some other Lenten aids in the works for Faith & Family readers this year. Look for an announcement about those here later today.

In the meantime, though, for the benefit of those last-minute ladies among us (You know who you are!) I thought I would share some of the ideas I got from friends on Facebook last week when I posted the simple request:... READ MORE

Fruits of Their Labor

Hard work pays off!

Please indulge yet another “proud mom” moment here on the blog, but I’m too excited not to share this good news.  It involves teens who worked hard, sacrificed, studied and ultimately accomplished their dreams.  The kids in question: my son Eric’s Academic Decathlon Team.

The dream actually began last year, when they came “oh so close” to defeating their nemesis, a cross town rival who had held... READ MORE
